The climax came when the weekly official weather forecast was issued, shutting off hopes which previ- ously were held that a general break- up of excessive heat and drought dam- aging the crop might be looked for soon. A maximum jump of nearly 4 cents a bushel over yesterday's finish on corn resulted, with wheat values strongly sympathizing. Closing quotations on corn were nervous at %a33% cents a bushel net advance, and more than 7 cents up from this week’s bottom figures. Wheat closed unsettled, '2al% cents over yes- terday's finish, oats showing 15all4 cents net gain and provisions unchanged to a rise of 5 cents. Severe damage already to corn was reported from various sections, Kansas advices in particular telling of terrific hot winds that were, figuratively if not literally, burning up the cornfields. Hardy speculators, nevertheless, dulged in considerable selling after the day’s opening bulge in prices, and something of a reaction followed for a brief interval, the basis being predict- ed showers in parts of the Northwest and West. Details pouring in, however, describing the ill effects of heat and drought, over the corn belt, as a whole. sent the market quickly up and again. with the weekly forecast later bringing | about a buying stampede. From start to finish trading in the corn market proved to be of broad vol- ume and especially in the last hour, the widespread prevailing excessive heat and drought being an incentive to gen- eral buving. Besides, numerous stop- loss orders to purchase were forced into operation from previous speculative sell- ers, who found themselves at a dis- advantage in the rapid upturn of values. December delivery of corn, representing the new crop, displayed the most strength. July and September con- tracts, that are filled from corn now In store, were less violently affected Aside from the stimulating influence of the upward flight of corn prices, the chief feature in the wheat market to- day was hig export business and per- sistent untavorable news from Spring crops territory, both north and south of the Canadian border, with crop news adverse also from Europe, France and Germany in particular. —_— Line -ilp for Wheat Market. BILLINGS, Mont. (#).—Some 30 co- operative grain assoclations are being organized throughout North Dakota and Montana by the Northwest Graln Association. Farmers’ Union leaders hope to trol between 80,000,000 and 100,000, bushels in the Northwest ‘wheat area. Officials of | the company declined to state the exact | number. Manufacture of the tractors will begin at once. William E. Vogelback, president of the American States Public Service Co., said earnings of the company for the six months ended June 30 will exceed by about 8 per cent those of the cor- responding period last year, when the company reported a net of $381,831. Among the early reports of June operations from railroads is that of the Kansas: City Southern, which re- ported net operating income of $419,- | 501 for the month, a decrease of $20.- 941 from $440443 for the like month last year. Net operating income for the six months ended June 30 was $2,319,300, compared with $2,777813 for the corresponding period last year. CHRYSLER ACTIVITIES HINT AGGRESSIVENESS . NEW YORK, July 19 (#).—Chrysler’s action in the last few days has been such as might suggest renewal of more aggressive tactics by interests who have sponsored the stock for a long time past. It tends, moreover, to bear out the report that the syndicate agree- ment which is understood to have ter- minated early this week, has been re- newed for another prolongsd period. Strength in the stock incidentally is accompanied by reports that the com- pany is bringing out a new model in the eight line which 1s expected to prove a profitable venture, Aeronautical exportss from France Sheep—1,000 head; today's market nhominal; by the week, 110 doubles from feeding statios 24,000 direct; come pared week fat lambs 75al1.00 lower; under grades, 1.00al.50 lower; supplies big and shipping demand com- paratively narrow; fat ewes, 25a50 higher; scarcity stimulating factor; late bulk native lambs, 10.00a10.25; early sales, 10.75a11.00; extreme top, 11.35; throwouts, 7.00a8.25; late, 5.75a6.50; best rangers, late, 10.60; yearlings, 8.508 9.25; fat ewes, 3.00a3.75; top, 4.00; bréeders, 5.60a6.00; feeding lambs, late, 7.60a7.85; early sales, 8.00.
