Y, July 19.—Two hundred residents of the lakeside com- munity of Sea Breeze, reinforced by strong frame, lined with pocket in top. leather handle and brass It is @pecial Correspondence of The Star. I ts ROME.—Italy’s occupation of Ghat, in the Sahara plateau, which concluded that campaign in Fezzen, was but the first step toward pacifying this much troubled region. For 16 years this dis- trict had been the headquarters of the rebels of the desert. The rebel leaders, Mohammed Ben Hag Hassam and Abed en Nebi, had escaped across the Algerian frontier, leaving many of their followers hiding in the district between Ghat and Mur- guk. On the east the occupation of Chabir and Uau el Namus forced the other leaders, the brothers Sef en Nas- ser, to make toward Tibesti. Suliman, the younger brother, with a number of followers, fled to Mount Haregi. The immense Fezzan depression was the hiding place of a number of Arab ma- rauders who preyed on the Bedoinnis, peaceful tillers of the soil. Rebel Leader Killed. A thorough search for the rebels was undertaken by the Zaptie on camels. They were discovered on Mount Haregl and a battle ensued. The Arabs lost their leader, Suliman, and were forced | to surrender. The commander of the Carabineers from Tropoli now can mo= tor from Krzuk to Ghat without being molested by Arab rebels. Chalifa Zaula, the chief of the irregu- lar troops, co-operated with the Italian native troops in restoring order and clearing the Fezzan of bandits. In the Sirtica, which has been a trou- blesome district for many years, there is still much work to be done, as ma- rauding bands still swoop down and steal sheep and carry off crops. In the district where the Mogarb population live under the leadership of Salah el Aleusi there is a tendency on the part of tribesmen to submit to the Italian au- thorities, who sequestered all sheep and cattle and camels held by the peaceful tribesmen. The rebels, fearing they ‘would lose their possessions, arranged to transfer them temporarily to_friends among the tribesmen. Gov. Badoglio learned of this and ordered the seizure of sheep, cattle and supplies, adding that they would be returned to their rightful owners upon their handing over their guns and ammunition. As a Bedouin without a gun is like a bird ‘without wings this drastic measure suc- ceeded. Disarming of Rebels Continue. Disarming of rebel forces began last June and is continuing gradually. As the rebels make peace they have the alternative of accepting work either on or the land reclamation. Italy’s task in Cyrenacia is not so sim- ple as in this tract, which was once the stronghold of the great Senussi con- fraternity. There 80-year-old Omar Muchtar for 10 years has waged war on Italy. Guerrilla warfare has become his | ty. He is considered to be a man | with a thousand lives. Many a time he has been surrounde!c‘l. ltmt nlw}alys h?a manaj to escape. Last year he sur- nndem but in has turned rebel. He and his followers have specialized in removing telephone and telegraph poles from the main routes, cutting off communication between outposts and towns of the sea front. When pur- suit became too hot he returned to raiding. Recently he issued a procla- mation dmanding a tithe of 10 per cent| of all crops and sheep. He ordered the peaceful Arabs to enroll among the ir- Tegular troops and then hand over to him the ammunitior. and guns which the Italian authorities would supply. As he needs horses he directed to en- roll in the cavalry. With this procla- mation he sent letters to tribal chiefs who had surrendered, warning them that disobedience to his orders would mean death. Italian authorities threat- ened to impose the same penalty if they have any communication with the rebels. | Tribes Concentrated. ‘The colonial authorities have con- eentrated the tribes who have submit- ted in three different districts, Baree, Cyrene and Derna, putting them to work under military surveillance. Work " on roads continued, and every | effort is being made to prevent secret communication between the rebels and | the workers. Aviation has been of great help in locating the rebels in hiding close to the oases With Gen. Graziani’s order that all| those who provide food, guns, ammuni- tion, horses or camels to the rebels will be put to death, supplies which the rebels have been receiving from the peaceful Bedouins will no longer be ob- | tainable. Cyranaica now is expected to | become a prosperous land, as it was in the days of the Roman Empire. TRAIN WRECKS TRUCK; |= ONE SLIGHTLY INJURED Driver Escapes Unhurt in Grade- | Crossing Accident in North- east Section. Two men escaped serious injury yes- terday when a truck of the Walker-Hill Co. was struck and demolished by a Washington-bound train of the Wi , Baltimore & Annapolis | line at Grant street and Kastle place norteast. Marvin Houghton, 24 years old, of 623 Gallatin street, a passenger in the truck, however, received slight injuries. He was removed to the office of a pri- vate physiclan and treated for minor | lacerations of the forehead, face and body and a crushed left foot. His con- | of the aeronautics branch are conduct- police and deputy sheriffs, yesterday were searching for a 20-foot, 200-pound { Indian python which escaped last night from the reptile exhibit of Edward Hayes. Warned by Hayes that the snake, sald to be one of the largest in captivity, though not poisonous, was fully capable of strangling a strong man in its con- | stricting coils, none but those armed with firearms were permitted to jomn the searching party. ‘Women and children were warned to stay indoors and business and social life came to an abrupt halt. Peter (Rattlesnake Pete) Gruber, na- tionally known reptile expert, was at the head of the searchers when they began their beating of the woods and underbrush along the lake shore and nearby Irondequoit Bay. The python broke out of its packing case during the night. Hayes’ exhibit of reptiles and curiosi- ties is a part of an amusement park at Sea Breeze, a Summer colony on the shore of Lake Ontario 7 miles north of here. The python was a recent addi- tion to his collection. Although lethargic after a heavy feeding, Hayes said the huge snake was very active and a menace when hungry. CASINO AT DIEPPE STANDS AT SEASIDE Place Has Been Rebuilt Into Mod- ern Establishment—Play There Is Leisurely. Special Dispatch to The Star. DIEPPE (N.AN.A).— The Casino has been rebuilt here and it now is one of the most modern establishments of France, and, besides, it is beautifully situated, right on the edge of the sea. M. Forons, who now runs it, having left the Sporting Club at Monte Carlo, declares that, in common with many other French casinos, it is likely to have to rely a good deal upon the support of French money. But the play is leisurely and amusing, with but little of the fevered gambling spirit so preva- lent in other continental casinos. The golf course, high up on the cliffs and overlooking the sea, has been re- modeled and converted into a thor- oughly sporting course, with good turf and greens. The barber of the Hotel Royal is still talking about King Alfonso. That dem- ocratic monarch, passing through Dieppe on his way to London, took the whole of the first floor for his party, which included 11 servants. The King went downstairs in the morning and sought out the barber for himself, sub- sequently becoming so interested in the history of that artist's entire family that he had to be asked to take care lest his chin suffer in the cause of his ex- treme sociability.
