BIG DRY RAID SEE IN STARNEWSREEL Dynamiting of Still Valued at $300,000 in New Jersey Is Pictured. One of the bigegst raids ever made by the dry officers since the induction of prohibition is sohwn in the latest Evening Star-Universal newsreel, Graham McNamee, the National Broadcasting Co. ace, gives a vivid de- seription of the event d of many other interesting scenes being shown today on the screens of Warner's Metropolitan, other Warner Bros. theaters and lead- ing Maryland and Virginia theaters. One of New Jersey's Biggest. A $300,000 still, which was the fargest plant in the State of New Jer- sey, was dynamited and completely de- molished at Clark's Landing, N, J. A Jookout warned the bootleggers of the approach of the prohibition officers, and the law violators fled and escaped cap- ture. The moonshiners had planned to manufacture $15,000 worth of alcohoi each day. Other interesting events include the opening of a “Miracle” shrine at Har- lem, New York, which was attended by thousands seeking a cure; the head-on collision of two engines at Los Angeles, Calif.: the transfer of $10,000,000 in specie from Toledo banks and a lawn fete at the White House, given by President Hoover to the wounded ‘World War veterans. Sporting Events. Interesting sporting events include & greyhound race, held at Mineola, N. Y.; a sensational roller - skating exhibit at Governors Island, N. WOUNDED ATTORNEY IN CRITICAL CONDITION John H. Roemer Shot Twice After Pointing Pistol at Girl He Didn’t Know. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, July 19.—John H, Roemer, 64, wealthy corporation attorney, was in’ a_critical condition from ~bullet wounds inflicted by policemen when he unexplainably held a revolver at the head of a girl he did not know. Roemer, former member of the Wis- consin Railroad Commission, was shot twice in the head. He had fired at two policemen who interfered and saved the life of the girl. The attorney, senior member of the firm which rep- resents the H. M. Byllesby Co. utility interests, explained be had been in ill health. T Roemer said he had been drinking. He was preparing to leave for a, vaca- tion in Wisconsin and had procured a pistol to take with him. Associates of the attorney sald the extreme heat evidently had aggravated his condition, rendering him -tem- porarily unbalanced. They said he had always been a man of “moral and up- right character, goocd habits and kindly disposition, with a fine record of, pro- fessional achievement.” Roemer 'had been living in a hotel while his wife was in New York. LONDON, July 19.—Lady Doyle to- day approved in general a message Te- ceived by a medium at Peterborough, Ontario, named Mrs. Mary Heron, re- putedly from the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. She said that she was in her hus- band’s study yesterday morning inspect- ing his papers, as the medium said, although she was not praying as indi- cated in the message. It was the first time she had been in the room since Sir 'Arthur's death and she agreed with the message that the room was the one where she dis- cussed with Sir Arthur all matters per- taining to their faith in spiritualism.
