Fertilizer—Sales of fertilizers in nine Southern States during March totaled 1,618,578 tons, compared with 1,862,551 tons year ago. In eight months, ended March 31, sales totaled 2,931,998 tons, against 2,976,108 in previous like period. Lead—American Smelting & Refining reduces price c* lead 15 points to 5.60 cents a pound. Paper and Paper Products—Although shipments of news print in first two months of 1930 showed a decrease of 1 per cent, as compared with similar 1929 period, the prospects are that con- sumption for the entire year 1930 will record no recession from the 1929 takings. Because of the unsatisfactory price levels ruling for the commodity and low operating ratios in relation to capacities, the earnings outlook for manufacturers, over the period, is poor. Trade sentiment as to the longer term prospect, however, is much improved, as it is believed that late this year price levels for newsprint, applying to 1931 contracts will be elevated. Such a de- velopment, naturally, would assist ma- terially in restoring this division of the industry to a profitable bass. Public Utility—February electric out- put totaled 7,624,000,000 kilowatt-hours, an increase of 3 per cent over February, 1929. Dally average was 272,300,000 kilowatt-hours, about 21 per cent below January. The Companies. Borg-Warner Corporation first orders for Norge refrigerators, manufactured by Borg-Warner subsidiary, will absorb fi'ndncflon of entire plant until late in ay. Calumet & Arizona March copper production, 7,100,000 pounds vs. 6,288, 000 year ago; three-month groductlon. 23,612,000 pounds vs. 15,702,000. Commonwealth Utilities acquires con- trol of St. Louis County Water Co., with total assests of $10,000,000, thl’ou[h purchase of 75 per cent of outstanding common stock at $225 a share. Federal Bake Shops, Inc., March sales up 2.6 per cent from year ago; three-month sales up 5.1 per cent. Ford Motor Co. of Canada producing about 500 cars daily. Insull Corporation of America ac- quires stock control of National Utilities Corporation, Ltd., of Canada. S. S. Kresge March sales off 10.4 per cent from year ago; three-month sales off 2.5 per cent. Had 596 American stores and 21 Canadian stores on March 31, 1930. McLellan Stores March sales off 10.5 per cent from year ago; three-month sales off 1.5 per cent. Melville Shoe March sales off 28.6 per cent from year ago: three-month off 11.6 per cent. National Bank Service earned $2,65 on_common stock in 1929. J. J. Newberry Co. March sales ug 5.6 per cent over year ago; three-month sales up 12.7 per cent. BUSINESS GATHERS MORE CONFIDENCE Business is entering the second quar- ter of the vear with a more confident tone, and the slight hesitation in re- covery that has been witnessed during the last few weeks apparently is not unfavorably affecting sentiment, ac- cording to Gage P. Wright, New York economist and president of the Busi- ness Economic Digest. who also draws the conclusion that the coming Sum- mer's seasonal let-down in general business may be less than usual. “For many months, economists have been positive in their belief that the elimination of uncertainty over a new tariff law would bring a favorable re- sponse from general business,” states Mr. Wright, who goes on to say: “The passage by the Senate, therefore, of the tariff bill increases somewhat the prob- ability that unsettlement from the tariff factor may soon be a thing of the past, although there yet remains the work to be done on the bill by the conference committee. It can be expected that the prevail- ing ease in money will prove construc- tive for business; abundant and cheap credit contributes to business expansion. Construction has continued on an in- creased scale, and preliminary esti- mates of March automobile production indicate a gain of about 9 per cent over the output of February. “It is significant that the national business survey conference finds tl generally speaking, the retarding fac- tors in business now are diminishing. Of special interest, is the situation in installment sales, which are approxi- mating in volume those of the corre- sponding time last vear. There is no great increase in failure to make pay- ments, notwithstanding decreased con- sumer purchasing power.” AMERICAN COAL CO. BALTIMORE, April 5 (Special)— The American Coal Co. of Allegany County, which operates mines in Mary- land and West Virginia, reports for the vear ended December 31, 1929, net in- come of $177,908 after depletion, de- preciation and Federal taxes. equivalent to $3.63 a share on 48,990 capital shares, $25 par value, outstanding. is com- pares with $197.676. or $3.17 a share on 49,790 capital shares outstanding in the preceding year. The balance sheet as of December 31 shows current assets of $1,260,742, com- pared with $1.211.800 as of ‘December 31, 1928; current liabilities of $145.982, against $154,481, leaving net working capital of $1,114,' 760 against Sl 057,319.
