The president ap- pointed three ladies to constitute a prayer group and asked that all mem- bers of the union join in the noon- tide prayer each day, definitely praying for the prohibition cause. North Star Union held its Decem- ber meeting at the home of Mrs. James Douglass in Chevy Chase, with Mesdames Morgan, Blish, Gustafson, Purdy, Sanger, Murray and Williams as assisting hostesses. In the absence of the president Mrs. T. J. Law, vice president, presided. It was voted tw order 4,000 leaflets from the Nationat for distribution during the remaining months of the season. A generous fund was raised for the Christmas work at the Tuberculosis Hospital. Ic was voted to contribute $5 for tne W. C. T. U. Light Line fund. Mrs. David Lum, in charge of tem- perance and missions in the Districe of Columbia, and formerly president or the W. C. T. U. in India, gave a sketcn of the temperance work in that coun- try. A solo was sung by Mrs. Willlam White. Chapin Union met December 4 at the residence of Mrs. Anna Barnhart, The president, Mrs. Keys, presided. Devo~ tional service was conducted by Mrs. L. ‘Wrightman. Minutes of the November meeting were read by the recording sec- retary, Mrs. Waggener, followed by re- ports from the various committees. The speaker of the meeting was Mrs. David Lum, director of the department of daily vacation Bible schools and re- ligious schools of the District W. C. T. U, and president of the Light Line Union, who explained the objects of the Light Line in spreading the knowl- edge of the W. C. T. U. work and aiding in the existence of unions which are of themselves unable to exist. Mrs. Lum also gave an interesting sketch of her W. C. T. U. work in India, where she edited a paper, and of the organization of W. C. T. U. unions in many foreign lands. Mrs. James Tibbetts told of her travels in India and of the beneficial results in that country of work there done by the British and Americans. Through Chapin Union the soldiers of ‘Walter Reed Hospital have been pre- sented with an afghan, knit for them by the late Mrs. Susan Richards, former secretary of the union. L. T. L. of Stelia Clayton Union.— The following officers have been elected by this group, composed of children be- tween the ages of 10 and 13 years: Marjon Cox, president: Helen Steed, vice president; Sarah Parks, secretary, and Thomas Whinerey, treasurer. At the December meeting held last week at the home of Mrs, Stella Clay- ton, Helen Hollidge was appointed superintendent of the flower department and Amelia Overmiller, superintendent 5f the mercy department. MEXICO CITY (Special).—President Portes Gil has issued a statement that no one who took part in the rebellious movements of 1923, 1927 or 1929 will be permitted to re-enter the national army. The statement was made as the result of numerous petitions by former rebels who have been pardoned by the gov- ernment to join the army.
