SOCIETY ' SECTION Che Sunday Star, WASHINGTON, ,D. C., SUNDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 15, 1929. MRS. JAMES P. STONE, Wife of the vice chairman of the Federal Farm Board, living: at the Mayflower. Rachrach Capital City Laying Plans For Great Social Activity In the Very Early Future Rush for Dates Expecte& at Close of Official Mourning Period—Busy Days Ahead in Official Circles. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. ASHINGTON is on the eve of a great social rush when on Wednesday the 30 days of official mourning for the death of Secretary of War Good expires. While the President and Mrs. Hoover have had some guests to dine with them they have religiously observed the period in deference to the memory of the President’s friend and cabinet officer. Wednesday evening they will entertain at dinner the Ambassador of Japan and Mme. Debuchi and the Japanese delegation to the London Naval Conference. The day following Christmas day they will entertain for the President- elect of Mexico. Y FTHERE seems to be an inordinate desire to press every event post- poned on account of mourning into the first few days following Wednesday, and that day in particular is a busy one. For the Am- bassador of Japan and Mme. Debuchi and the Secretary of the Navy and Mrs. Adams, the days are especially full ones, the Japanese dele- gates to the London Naval Conference arriving in the Capital to- morrow to remain until Thursday afternoon, when they will leave for New York. So large are several of the entertainments planned by the Ambassador that the Mayflower Hotel will be used for the purpose instead of the embassy. ABINET hostesses will observe Wednesday afternoon at home for the first and only time until the New Year, when officials will have returned from their holiday home visits and society will be in full swing. There will be several Senate ladies observing Thursday, and as for the Supreme Court ladies, they most punctiliously ob- serve Monday, only illness or absence from the city preventing it. OCIETY will meet Secretary and Mrs. Hurley, for the first time since the Secretary's elevation to a cabinet post, at a reception ‘Wednesday night, when they will greet the guests at the first of the series of Army dances at the Willard, postponed on account of of- ficial mourning. Neither the Secretary nor Mrs. Hurley is a stranger to Capital society and that they will be constantly feted goes with- out saying. No appointment the President has made has met with more universal approval. LEADING up to Christmas night is a series of balls and dances, events overlapping, both for the afternoons and nights. Christ- mas eve the United States Ambassador to Chile and Mrs. Culbertson will give a ball for their debutante daughter, Miss Junia Culbertson, who already has met other debutantes and been much feted. The first dance of the series being given by the Friday evening dancing class will take place at the Willard this week, and this brilliant club will continue their dances throughout the Winter. Mrs. Parker W. West is in charge of arrangements. NOTHER charming event of this week is the second of the Navy and Marine Corps dances, also to take place at the willard, and the dance of Thursday night will be preceded by many dinner parties, as will the Army dance the previous night. One of the sprightliest functions of the entire season—one that fairly brims with youth—is the midshipman and cadet ball Christmas night at the Mayflower. HE Vice President and Mr. and Mrs. Gann, Maj. Gen. and Mrs. Summerall, Representative and Mrs. Adam Wyant, Maj. Gen. and Mrs. B. Frank Cheatham, Maj. Gen. and Mrs. Clarence C. Wil- liams, Brig. Gen. and Mrs. Frank R. Keefer and others of the Navy, with many in official life and private society, are sponsoring the ball for the embryo soldiers and sailors, and no matter what other dancing event may turn up for that night, the debutantes and the sweethearts of the group of cadets and midshipmen will be there to see that they do not lack partners.
