There has been a material increase in the safety of flying in the Navy dur- ing the past year, according to the an- nual, report of the surgeon general of | the Navy, made public yesterday. “Although aviation ~activities have made tremendous strides in the squad- ron and group operations and the num- | ber of flying hours of pilots has greatly increased.” it is stated in the report, “the number of flying hours per fatality has increased from 3,900 to almost 6,- 600. There was a greater total number of deaths due to aviation accidents, but, as noted, there were fewer fatalities per flight and per flying hours.” The necessity for more extensive | training of flight surgeons is becoming | more and more apparent, it is stated in | the report. The new problems intro- | duced by increasingly extensive oper- ations of naval aircraft by individual pilots and squadrons, increased speed of service planes, operations at greater | altitudes, night operations and other | new types of operations are demanding | a searching study, according to the sur- | geon general. “It is very difficult for flight surgeons {on duty with regular operating units to fulfill properly their duties and carry on research in addition,” it is reported. “The question of establishing a research |unit at Pensacola is under considera- tion.” Research is being conducted on audi- tory fatigue under flying conditions and its ‘bearing on radio receiption, ocular poise as an evidence of fitness to fly, the significance of moderate degrees of heterophoria_and the * maintenance of equilibrium under varying conditions. During the past year there were only 85 deaths of hospital cases resulting from flight accidents and 169 from ali types of acronautic hazards, including injuries in hangars and on ground duty. Seventy-two of the 85 flight accident | cases resulted from crashes, which in- cluded collisions with any object in taking off, in the air or in landing. ‘There were 37 deaths from flight in- Jurles. | Floods in New Zealand have caused loss of life, drowned hundreds of cattle | and caused heavy property damage.
