A practical test to . s 4 7 5 duplicate the effect of the sun on !uchl g ° products as auto topping and bathing x caps, however, is yet to be perfected. “The more varied the uses to which rubber is put,” explains Bierer, “the more varied are the conditions under . which it ages, and the less it can be X test & 3 AT . iifi'%'fign:c:ifn&"s{ }73&'55 :ra: frions: : ; Well taflfo‘ifd of 1h:-).m:lso.me c]lpth. most T t fa ic] ro- S mote. the delerioration of rubber gbods | ‘ Coats that follow the gracious lines T idati by atmospheri %3 | > @t i ;tfe:::l::fix:at};n. mi:c“’eéncu.":ry.’c'%'. | of the new silhouette . . . low-placed SuRlight, and wear or deterioration due . flares, the new empire coat, cape coat, to mechanical work. ] wrap coat and slim, straightline Exposure of Types Differ. 8 . The artificial aging tests which have o developed up to the present time have (Third Floor, The Hecht Co.) 3 been on an entirely opposite principle, Davis reports. Chemists of the large rubber manufacturers have tried only to determine the resistance of a rubber product to the one most im- portant influence to which it is ex- posed in service. The Geer oven test, which is a heat test: the oxygen bomb test developed by Blerer and Davis, wherein rubber is suspended in bxygen at certain temperatures to approximate the effects of oxidation; the Fadeo- meter test, which is an effort to simu- late the effect of the sun, and various mechanical tests are all based on this principle. 8 4 Intensitying of Sunlight. “Thus, when bathing caps are ex- posed to a Fadeometer or to ultra-vio- let light,” Davis continues, “the idea is only to intensify greatly the action of sunlight, while oxidation, after-vul- canization and other effects are ignored. Similarly, when inner tubes are aged in the oxygen bomb, the purpose is to de- termine their resistance to oxidation and to regard the influence of heat and mechanical, wark. “Because most. rubber goods deterio- D A rate from scveral influences rather than RO P one, and because present-day aging tests o do not intensify each of the factors to 0 Ny the same degree, it cannot be ted £ \ S by that any of the aging tests duplicates natural aging. Nevertheless, where the predominant effect in the artificial test is also the predominant effect in nat- ural aging, almost the same results from a practical viewpoint are obtained. iy ~‘Tests which intensify oxidation, heat effects ‘and mechanical work have been developed to a high degree of practical utility, but it still remains for someone N i el it ing e 1 Fashion Mode New Costume AR rer and Davis, is the most recent te: many smart styles.
