Harkness Pre-| sents Original Documents of Mexico and Peru. Another gift of unusual historical | } ipts, just made to the Library ; of Congress by Edward S. Harkness of New York, has brought to the institu- tion two more lots of cotemporary . Harkness a year ago of two_collections of original documents h Mexico and Peru at the | oceupation | by Cortez and Pizarro and their suc- cessors. From an_historical viewpoint. these gifts are held by the Library authorities as altogether unequaled among the gifts which have accompanied its extraor- dinary development in recent years. ‘The papers in all four lots long re- mained unknown. Following their dis- covery they were aequired eventually by Mr. Harkness. They contain much that ‘was unknown ta the earlier historians of Spain in the New World, and are the documentary bases for the re- creation of the life in the settlements that were established and populated by | the stout adventurers and those who | came after them. | Papers Dated in 1531. Among _the Peruvian papers are two dated at Coaqui in 1531, one on Septem- ber 10, the other on September 11. Pisarro, sailing beneath consecrated banpers, and with shining visions of untold wealth drawing him on, had started from Panama in January of that year. The manuscripts received from Mr. Harkness in the first gift contain an important group of letters and papers dated at Coaqui between April 19 and June 15, 1531. These two . additional papers are dated three months later. Eight months had now {one by since the ecclesiastical benedic- ion on the expedition was pronounced; the documents of September 10 and 11 reveal the constant thought of gold. ‘The first of these is a promise by Diego de Narvaes to pay to Juan de la Torre 50 pesos in the precious metal from the first money or treasure gained i the sought-for land of EI Dorado. The note is indorsed by Francisco Martin Alburrar. The other document is an “act of company,” for four years, between Alonso Ximines and Alonso Lopez to share equally during that peried in all that they may gain. Prancisco Pizarro’s name appears in a letter signed at Lima July 4, 1537, by Juan Rubio, addressed to Cristoval de Purgos and to “the very magnificent Senor Don Franeisco Pizarro, zflvtmur.l adelantado, and captain general of this province of New Castile for His Maj- esty,” who, in the authorization con- ferred by the letter, were tc have power to act for Rubio. Pizarro himself is the signer of a letter, dated Lima, Sep- tember 26, 1537, in which he instructs his solicitors in Spain, ¥rancisco Mal- | donado, Francisco Calderon, Antonio Pellez and Hernando de Cevallos, to present an account of his many services in Peru to the Emperor, and to ask a recompense for them. The commission was successfully executed and the grate- ful heart of Charles V responded with a new coat-of-arms for Pizarro and a marquisate. | Conquerors Represented. Many other conqucrors are also rep- resented in these manuseripts. A docu- ment of August 20, 1548, bears the au- tograph of Nicolas de Ribera, the elder, one of the undaunted “thirteen” who, on the Isla de Gallo, crossed the line | which Pizarro had drawn on the sand and cast their lot ‘with him. A letter of September 15, 1850, is from Hernan Mexia, who, as governor of Nombre de | Dios, the important aj ch to Peru, turned from Gonzalo Pizarro and gave his aid to the reformer Pedro de la Gasca, shortly before named by Charles as the Audiencia. ‘Ten letters or other documents, dated between 1582 and 1595, signed by the Adelantado Alvaro de Mendana, deal with his projected voyages and plans for the colonization of islands in the | South Sea, and for the further expan- sion of Spain's imperfal domains to some possible still richer region thought to be within easy sail of Peru. An earlier voyage by Mendana, begun in November, 1567, undertaken with the proclaimed vurPuu to convert all in- fidels to Christianity,” resulted in find- | ing that cn- certain islands which he | had discovered, and on which he lost | soveral of his crew, the intransigent in- | fidels were eannibals. The marvelous | stories that Mendana brought ‘back of the wealth ofsthose islands gave rise to the belief among the credulous that they were the source of the gold that adorned Solomon’s Temple. So it came about that the islands came to be called the Solomon Islands. On his last voyage, still dreaming his dreams of colonization and a yet vaster empire, Mandana discovered the Mar- quesas Islands, which he so named in Thonor of t) wife of his patron, the viceroy Garcia Hartado de Mendoza, Marquise de Canete. On this voyage Mendana died. His widow., Dona Isa- bel de Barreto, a woman of unusua! force and redoubtable courage, took command of one of his surviving ships and salled onward with it, reaching at | last a haven in Manila Bay. Warning te Ship Owners. ‘The manuscripts relating to Mexico e also much diversified. An interest- | ing example is a warning issued at Vera | Crug, October 27, 1586, by Francisco | Lopes Robellero, acting for the inquisi- | tion, and addressed to ship owners, | merchants, passengers, and others, stating that all boxes containing books d images brought on ships entering the port of Vera Crus must be brought before him to be sealed and then for- warded to the city of Mexieo for inspec- | tion by the inquisitors, under penalty | of excommunication and a fine of 10/ pesos in gold. Accompanying this | document is a declaration stating that it was read October 1586, at the cathedral of Vera Cruz the presence | of a large congregation. Others of the manuseripts in the | Mexiean lot deal with the affairs of individuals and families; some of them with ecclesiastical and legal concerns. N | ‘The legal material adds to the already | extraordinary collection of the kind m“ the lot previously received from Mr. | Harkness. As study of the manuscripts in this loth proceeded at the library there have been constant disclosures of | the primary importance of these papers | for all future students of the period, of special events of the period, of 7”7 which these manuscripts are concerned Almost entirely dealing, as they do, with a geries of cases at law between the years of 1531-15 n which some of |7 the most conspicuous and most famous of the eonquerors, or members of these famllies, were involved, including re- peatedly the Marques del Valle, Don Martin Cortes, they paint the rlctuu of the time and its events as nothing else could show them. The freshness of thi material to the investigator, and the that it should have so long surviv unknown, make its discovery by L Rosenbach the more remarkable, and | the gift of it by Mr. Harkness to the National Library obviously a matter of unusual gratification to its authorities Miss Oelrichs Will Broadeast.
