" CHURGH BUILDING T0BE DEDICATED Episcopa! Leaders Plan Cere- monies on Mount St. Alban Thursday. With the members of the House of | Bishops and other distinguish>d lead- | ers of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States in attendance, the | College of Preachers’ Building on Mount | St. Alban will be dedicated Thursday. Among ‘the speakers will be Rev.| Frank Thecdore Woods, Bishop of Win- chester, England, who will come to ‘Washington to participate. Rev. James E. Freeman, Bishop of Washington, and Rev. Philip M. Rhinelander, former Bishop of Pennsylvania, also are on the program. ‘The building was constructed through the generosity of the late Alexander Smith Cochran of Yonkers, N. Y. He contributed $400,000 for the erection of the structure and $1,000.000 for the endowment and maintenance of the work. The enterprise commemorates the name of the donor’s mother, the late Mrs. Willlam F. Cochran. Purpose of Structure. ‘The new structure is to hcuse an institution providing post-ordination training of clergymen. The purpose is to “bring their sacred profession into line with the scientific standards of the current era.” It also is planned to pre- pare evangelists an4 mussionaries. Whep the corner Stone of the build- | ing was laid on Ascension day, May 17, 1928, Bishop Preeman stated the purpose of the College of Preachers in these words: “The.supreme end and purapse of the Christian religion is the enfranchisement and enrichment of the human soul. To interpret to men the mind of the Master; to give them an understanding of the deep and satisfy- ing values of life: to teach them to em- ploy rightly the means necessary to sal- vation, is the high and holy privilege of the Christian ministry. To this end the | college js founded in the sure confidence that the bulwark and sustaining strength of the Nation is in an abiding and unchanging practice of the Chris- tian religion. Comprehensive Vision of Church. “The college is designed to give to| its students a ‘comprehensive and broadly Catholic vision of the history and unity of the Christian church since its inception. It will lay unfailing emphasis on those central and eternal teachings of the Master which spcure to the Christian ministry its power and usefulne through its sacramental of- fice in the priesthood; through its edi- fying and inspiraticnal office in the prophethood, and through its comfort- i}:gdlgd consoling office in the pastor- In further explanation of the plans for the institution, Bishop Freeman has said: “Our generation has witnessed a serious decline in the prophetic power of the church. It is our hope and ex- g‘!lclntian. when once this college fis ilt and men of inspirational power are here to train those who are to be sent forth as evangelists, that a new day will dawn for our church, and its hallowed offices receive freshened im- pulse and deepened devotion. We dare to believe that in a time as critical as the present, when old things are passing away and innovaticns and uses foreign to this church are being discussed and practiced, when the clamorous voices of those who do violence to ancient tradi- tions, creeds and systems are being heard that such a.college as . this will be more to stabilize and strengthen the church’'s ministry than the many agencies and mechanisms which it has called into being in recent years. At. such a time as the present, there is! need to emphasize those things which lie at the very foundation of our house- hold of faith, those things that alone can contribute to a finer appreciation of its solidarity and essential unity.” CHALIAPIN TRIUMPHS IN-COMEDIAN'S ROLE Imitates Lady of Fashion Doing Her Hair During Private | Party in London, LONDON (N.AN.A).—Two great fore! artists have recently been de- lighting London audiences—Chaliapin | and Mme. Yvette Guilbert, French diseuse. Chaliapin chose the enormous Albert Hall as his center of operations, and by the magic of his art made every one in his audience of 6,000 think he was singing to that one person alone. He was in rather somber mood, perhaps beuuu‘ ‘t’)’: his sore Wz’hron. and sang some of the most my songs in his repertoire. T in the week, however, when M. Chaliapin was at a private party in London, he proved himself a brilliant comedian. He would not sing on this occasion, but in dumb show gave an imitation of a lady of fashion doing her hair, making up her face, powdering her nose and using a lipstick, which made “Boris Godounov” seem a long way off! This “turn” was emphatically the success of the evening. Yvette Guilbert, who has beer ap- pearing at the Tiny Arts Theater Club, is no longer the “silhouette in black gloves,” who shocked our parents in the nineties. LONDON (N.AN.A).—Miss Sheila Kaye-Smith, novelist, and her husband, Rev. lore Fry, are making a new home_ for themselves at Northiam, an Old World Sussex village which has often been described in Miss Kaye- Smith's novels. They have bought an ancient farm- house with diamond-framed windows and solid oak beams, and are having it rebuilt. An enormous barn is to be a kind of outer lounge. This should make a good background for the antique brasses Miss Kaye- Smith collects, and she, with her serious eyes and dark hair cut like that of » medieval page, should look her best in such a setting.
