BRITAIN MOVING NAVY T0 MALTA Pacifists View Concentration in Mediterranean With Alarm for Peace. By Cable o The Star and Naw York World. LONDON, July 24—While the League of Nations s talking some- what perfunctorily about disarmament British pacifists are greatly perturbed over the concentration of naval strength in the Mediterranean—in in which, however, Britain scems to be A:e" :hte:dd of ali rivals. pointed out by the naval expert of the London Daily News (a decidedly pacifist newspaper), for some years past Britain has been quletly concen trating all her latest and most power- ful warships in the Mediterranean and the question arises for what, since Britain is nominally on excellent terms with the next two Mediterranean naval powers, Frgnce and Italy. 82 Ships at Hand. According to the latest navy list, Admiral Sir Roger Keyes (of Zee brugge fame, and Britain's comman der-in-chiet in the Mediterranean) has at his disposal no fewer than 62 combatant ships and 20 auxillaries, all based on Malta. This fleet comprises all the largest, fastest and most heav- ily gunned units of the British navy. Besides his flagship, the Warspite, Admiral Keyes has five other battle ships of the Queen Elizabeth and Royal Soverelgn type, making easily the most powerful battle-squadron in Europe. It is armed with 48 fifteen inch guns, while the heaviest ‘weapon mounted in any continental battle ship is the 13.4-inch gun. Four Destroyer Flotillas. In the Mediterranean also are the British first and second cr:li:‘m squadrons, including the 10,000-ton 31-knot Frobisher, armed with 7.h inch guns (and the last work in post { Washington Arms Conference crufs ers) and seven other cruisers, all capable of stdaming at 29 knots. Two alrcraft carriers, including the giant Eagle, are also allotted to the fleet There are also four destroyer flotillas, commanded by a rear admiral, com prising the very latest British types and numbering 32 destroyers, with four flotilla leaders. Submarines are represented by the latest “L"” class boats. France and Italy seem to have besn somewhat worried about this concen tration and are striving hard to main tain the equilibrium hy adding to their respective navies. The French Medi terranean squadron as now organized consists of six dreadnaughts, all in ferior in power to the British, six cruisers, 40 destroyers and 30 sub- marines, with many more craft in re- serve. Ttaly Ahead of France. Except in battleships Italy is for the time being superior to France, as the whole of her naval tonnage is concentrated in Mediterranean waters She has flve dreadnaughts and two | older battleships, 10 cruisers, 50 de stroyers and 30 submarines. France is building six cruisers, 30 destroyers and 31 submarines. The Italian build ing program includes two cruisers 16 destroyers and 12 submarines. Most of these vessels are destined for the Mediterranean service—but so are the two great new British battleships Nelson iind Rodney. So that Admiral Keyes still will have supremacy on the blue waters of the “inland sea.” Britain’s great naval base, of course, remains at Malta, but France and Italy have been extending and im- proving their bases. France has great war harbors at Toulon and Bizerta, with secondary bases at Ajacclo, Bonifacio, Algiers and Oran. Italy is developing a new base in Sardinia and modernizing some of her numerous dockyards on the mainland. In addi tion to the regular naval harbors many naval aircraft stations have sprung - up on the Mediterranean shores. .
