VOTE GRAFT PROBE | OPENS TOMORROW Senate Committee to Start Inquiry Into lllinois Pri- mary in Chicago. B the Associated Press JCHICAGO, July 24.-All the tales of political chicanery told behind terred doors to four nd juries since Illinois beld its April primaries 3 for the mill of a special United States Senate election investi sating committee, which meets here Monday, under the chairmanship of Senator James A. Reed There is no indication how far it nay proceed into the jumble of ing, slush funds, alliapces of politi s with gunmen and ‘hootleggers and other irregular- iues which have been charged in the last three month ime, these things stand at least as 2 packground for the committee in its particular mission of discovering how much Frank L. Smith and Sen- ator William B. The Senate fight was only a detail in Cook County of bitter factional contests over nominations for county offices, and Smith and McKinley found their fortunes linked in Chicago and its environs with the fortunes of the " opposing = Republican factions which supported them. SEES 6. 0. P. GRIP ON SENATE BROKEN Gerry Predicts Party Spit Will Put Democrats in Control. By the Associated Press " A prediction that the Democrats will control the next Senate was made vesterday by Senator Gerry of Rhode Island, chairman of the Democratic senatorial campaign committee, who declared that the Republican party was split into two factions, seemingly evenly divided on the tariff. “The Republican party is so badly divided and has been for some time that it could not have organized the Senate last year had the full Demo- cratic strength voted.” he said. “The Democrats refused, however, to make any_coalitions. “The country must realize that the only -party that has been 3 agree on a policy and car has been the Democrats, Republigans in the last session of { Congress were only able to enact leg- | islation on important measures by Democratic assistance. “The people, in my judgment, have decided that one of the two parties must be in actual control of the ate, able to carry out a leg program. The Democratic party the only one today which has a party program. It represents sound, pro- gressive principles and can be relied upon to carry them out in a sane way."” Senator Gerry said the Democrats in Congress intended, among other things, to press for tariff revision. HENDAYE, France, July 24.—The Spanish Prince of Asturias, heir to the throne, is seriously ill. Although his condition is not considered. dan- gerous, it is enough to bring a post- ponement of his trip to Santiago de Galicia. The prince was under the care of Dr. Maranon, who was arrested with the other alleged plotters against the De Rivera regime. Since then the doctor has mnot been able to attend the prince, and the public is begin- ning to voice a demand that De Rivera allow him to do so, as the prince is apparently worse since the doctor's care was removed. The members of the royal family have even offered to pay the expenses of a special guard to watch the doctor. (Copyright. 1926.)
