Ayars, 61, vet- ertan of the Spanish-American and World Wars, died of a heart attack last night at his home, 217 Maple avenue. ~ Col. Ayars, who was principal clerk to the United States surgeon general at the time of his death, was born in Savannah, Ga., on December 13, 1874, but moved to Wilmington, Del,, at an | early age. Served Overseas. He entered the Delaware Volunteers at the outbreak of the Spanish-Amer- ican War, attaining the rank of cap- | tain, and was mustered out at the end of the conflict. He re-entered the service of his country for the World War and served overseas. During the war he was promoted to the rank of major and was retired to the Reserve Corps as a colonel when the war ended. Col. Ayars was educated in the public schools of Wilmington and moved to Washington soon after the Spanish-American War, later estak- lishing residence in Takoma Park. Active in Fraternities. He was active in fraternal circles and was past master of the Takoma Park Lodge of Masons, past high priest of the Columbia Chapter of the Masonic order and & member of | Almas Temple Shrine. He was sec- | retary to the Takoma Park Lodge when stricken. The deceased is survived by his Mrs. Clara Mae Ayars; one daughter, Mrs. Alice Joseph of Ta- koma Park, and a son, Charles J. CHICAGO, September 26.—Miss Harriet Monroe, 76, who became in- ternationally known as “the patron saint of American poetry” during the years she extended a helping hand to aspiring young poets, died today at_Arequipa, Peru. Relatives here were informed she succumbed 24 hours after suffering a heart attack. Founded Magazine. Miss Monroe’s first literary efforts appeared in Chicago newspapers. Subsequently she published several volumes of poems. Then in 1893, at the opening of the World's Fair here, 5,000 voices joined in chanting her “Columbian Ode.” In 1912 she founded the magazine Poetry. It was her belief that the establishment of this endowed publi- cation marked the “renaissance of American poetry.” She served as its editor and was credited with discovering such widely read poets and writers as Carl Sand- burg, Maxwell Bodenheim, Edgar Lee Masters and Glenway Westcott. Published “The Passing Show.” published were “The Passing Show- Modern Plays in Verse,” “You and 1" “The Difference and Other Poems” and “Poets and Their Art.” At the offices of the magazine, it was.sald the publication would be continued. Miss Monroe was survived by a brother, William, of Chicago. and sister, Mrs. Lucy Calhoun, of Peiping, China. Miss Monroe was touring South America as a guest of the Pen Club. - Coue Died in 1926.
