OFFCAL FAMIES REPORTED FLEENG Buenos Aires Hears Azana Asks to Board Ship, but Minister Denies It. B the Associated Press. BUENOS AIRES, September 26.— Families of members of the Madrid eabinet have taken refuge in the Ar- gentine Embassy, it was reported here tonight. Reliable sources said Presi- dent Manuel Azana himself had asked 16 be taken aboard an Argentine war- ship. President Azana's wife, the daugh- tér of War Minister Indalecio Prieto, and other relatives of the Madrid Socialist cabinet, informed sources here said, were among those given protection by the Argentine Embassy. . They were being taken to the port of Alicante to board a cruiser, it was stated. Detailed information from | Argentine diplomats was lacking, how- | ever, and the actual situation in Madrid was in doubt. (Rigid censor- ship prevented reference to the Ma- drid cabinet members and their re- ported action in news dispatches.) It was understod here the women- folk of the Spanish cabinet had asked to be transported to any French port. They were to board the 25 De Mayo, Argentine's 6,800-ton cruiser and the only South American warship now in Spanish waters. The President and his cabinet mem- bers, reports here said, had thus far refrained from actually boarding the | cruiser themselves. It was mdlcned} they had asked permission to use the | ship as a refuge should they be forced to flee Madrid. | Argentina’s minister of the interior, | Ramon Castillo, observed reports of Azana’s possible flight “appear to con- tain & great deal of truth,” but he was unable to confirm officially details from his country’s representatives in the Spanish capital. DENIES AZANA TO FLEE. GENEVA, September 26 (#).—The Spanish foreign minister, Julio Alvarez | Delvayo, asserted ‘fonight that the | “military situation is considerably im- proved” in Spain and that reports| President Manuel Azana was ready to | flee Madrid were “absurd.” | Delvayo said he had talked by tele- | phone with Premier Francisco Largo Caballero. The premier, he intimated, | had just come from 2 conference with | President Azana. Censorship of dispatches from the | Spanish capital, Delvayo said, shortly | would be lifted with a new director | of the Censorship Bureau. Hence- forth, he said, only military informa- | tion which might be of value to the | Fascist insurgents will be held up. (The London office of the Associated | Press was informed seven dispatches sent from Madrid during the evening had been eliminated by the censor. (Attempts to = confirm Spanish Fascist assertions that Toledo had | been taken by the insurgents, who were sald to have rescued their fel- lows in the Alcazar fortress, brought no response from Madrid.) . Many of Bilbao's buildings were set afire by the bombs from 10 Fascist war planes which roared over the city in the day-long attack yesterday. Cit- | izens went through the streets shout- ing demands of death for insurgent sympathizers. The British consulate was damaged during an attack Friday night. The Fascist attack from the air apparently was the sequel to warn- ings that Bilbao would be destroyed unless its defenders surrendered be- fore dawn last Friday. Popular indignation over the bom- bardment caused a huge crowd to threaten to assault two ships on which Fascist prisoners were held, one tied to a dock at the military airport and the other near the muni- tions plant. The hostage vessels had been put in those positions because they were close to what were expected to be targets of insurgent bombs.. Basque guards turned back the crowd which made for the vessels— the Cabo Quillets and Ultana Mendi —and removed them to an anchorage of Las Arenas, outside Bilbao. Rumors 60 Are Executed. There were rumors—which authori- ties refused to discuss—that 60 hos- tages had been executed in reprisal for the Fascist bombardments of the | city. The bombers dropped leaflets that the attack would continue until the surrender was forced—to which So- cialist commanders of the city's mili- tia hurled defiant replies. They would hold out to the last| man, the government leaders said. Basque nationalists, striving to pre- vent looting and unchecked mob rule, | | patrolled the city. But Eliadore de la | Tore, chief of the Basque troops, promised the crowds they would be given the satisfaction they demanded —death for the hostages to avenge the death of citizens killed in the bombardments.
