G—2 STOCK LIST HOLDS AT STEADY LEVELS Only Alcohols, Some Motors and Specialties Reflect Modest Demand. Tines nchanged - ‘Total issues _ BY FRANK Mac Mlm Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, September 38— Btocks today slid along a level groove with only the alcohols, some of the motors and scattered specialties at- tracting modest buying demana. In terms of the Associated Press average of 60 stocks, the market was unchanged at 49.4. Volume totaled 619,020 for the two-hour sessiom. Brokers said that the failure of the list to move in either direction tended to reflect the disposition of the finan- cial community to await clarification of both the foreign situation and do- mestic trade. 4 Wall Street analysts pointed out that the day's news had produced little change in the way of market in- fluence. It was further said that the bulk of the buying represented the accumulation of shares by those hope- ful for the domestic industrial outlook. Selling, on the other hand, was said to have consisted principally of liqui- dation of in-and-out traders who wanted to be clear of the market in the event of any unforseen week end changes in the Italo-Ethiopian situa- tion. ‘Trading in the liquor sector was FINANCIAL. comparatively brisk, heralding the approach of seasonal gains in con- sumption. Purthermore, some quar- ters said the alcohol companies were in a favorable statistical position. Schenley Distillers bounced up to 41%, a new high for the year, and closed 1% higher at 41%. One of the specialties in favor was Greyhound, which reached a new high for the year at 66% on the official re- port of co-ordination of bus and reil service in co-operation with the New York Central Buying of American Bank Note preferred netted a gain of 1 point at 62. Wall Street expectations are that the outlook for financing will bring & demand for security certificates. Other senior issues which turned in gains of 1 to 4 points included American Radiator at 159, Hercules Powder at 126% and Sloss Sheffield Steel at 60. Hardening of these stocks was thought to signify in part that idle money is still aggressively in search of profitable employmens. A scattering of prominent equities edged ahead fractionally, including American Can at 141%, American ‘Telephone at 1397, Chrysler at 727%, General Motors at 463, Montgomery Ward at 32% and U. S. Steel at 45%;. CLEARING HOUSE ISSUES REPORT AT NEW YORK By the Associated Press.
