WEEKLY SUMMARY OF THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE FOR WEEK ENDING SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 1935, 1938 — Net 1935 — FORTHER CANS Many New Highs Recorded, but Selectivity Rules Active Session. ‘WHAT STOOKS DID. Satyrdey. Priday. lvances .. 430 nchanged Total issues BY FRANK MACMILLEN, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, June 15.—Aided by a spanking breeze of good sentiment, stocks blew along to many new highs for the year in active trading on the New York Stock Exchange today. Brokers said the demand for shares chiefly reflected three factors: Quieter nerves in the financial district, bright spots on the business horizon and the continued quest of idle money for profitable employment. The buying, however, was selective and much of the list was barely changed. It was pointed out in some quarters that owners of funds and brokers have been favorably impressed with the indications of relative stability which marked the third week follow- ing the Supreme Court’s N. R. A. de- cision. This factor has tempted a fair amount of previously timid money into equities, they maintained. Measured by the Associated Press average of 60 stocks, the market rose .1 to 44.2, a new top for the yea The hourly pace of trading was some- 158 816 Northwest Grain By the Associated Press. RICHMOND, Va., June 15—Vir- ginia wheat has been selling for 20 to 25 cents more a dushel than the grain from the Northwestern States because Virginia farmers do not pro- duce enough for home consumption, and the price, therefore, is the cost of Western wheat plus freight, storage and other charges, Henry Taylor, Federal-State agricultural statistician, said today. Only during the Summer months, when many small producers without facilities for holding their wheat are selling, does the Virginia price drop to the Western level, he pointed out. On December 1 wheat in Virginia ‘was bringing 98 cents, while the price in Oregon was 72 and that in Wash- ington State 73. On May 15 the price was 72 in Oregon and 75 in Washing- ton State and the Virginia quotation was 99, STORE SALES SOAR HIGHEST IN WEEKS AS HEAT ARRIVES (Continued Prom First Page.) last week. Warm weather stimulated retail sales of merchandise in most reporting cities. ATLANTA—Retail trade was quick- | ened by weather in the sixth district and Southern farmers were heartened by a survey which showed that while rains and late cold weather had re- what faster than on Friday. Transac- tions totaled 579,620 shares. Santa Fe was up 114 at 47’4, Union | Pacific had a gain of % at 1057, and | New York Central was up % at 18'4. Cerro de Pasco was down 1 point | at 57. while U. S. Smelting gave up | 2', at 1083, both under pressure | which was said in some quarters to come from speculators who were un- | certain over which way the Treasury silver buying cat will jump next. Although the average run of in- dustrials advanced fractionally, Amer- fcan Can was up 13, at 140'f and Philip Morris puffed ahead for a gain of 2%. STOCKS FORGE UP AS CHEAP MONEY DEMANDS OUTLET | ™ (Continued From First Page) that they had come to regard it as moribund. Then, with other securi- ties unattractive from the standpoint of price, they began to look back over the quotations of the past. They found that in 1931, or after there already had been a sweeping decline in car- | rier stocks, 12 railroad common or capital shares—Baltimore & Ohio, | Northwestern, Delaware & Hudson, Lackawanna, Erie, Great Northern, Illinois Central, Lehigh Valley, North- | day’ ern Pacific and Southern Railway— | had sold at an average of about 85 and were then available at an average around 12. If they wished to be really fasci- »‘ nated by the performances of the past, | they could go back to 1929, when these | same stocks were being accumulated at a range between 40 and 256. “Past | Performances” have their advocates | in Wall Street, as well as on the race tracks. No little buying of stocks | occurs from year to year on what they | may have done at some other nme.\ rather than on their immediate prom- ises. Tt is a safe assertion that at one | stage or another of a rising market, | every neglected list of securities will | have its day.
