In addition the club it- | self maintains four cabins and con- templates several more in the local group's area, Thus a hiker can plan his route to avoid all towns and | farms, or he may plan so he can se- cure meals without doing his own | cooking and find a night's lodging at the end of each day's walk. ‘The cabins are adequate shelter for a night or in bad weather. THE Potomac Appalachian Trails Club was organized in 1927 and its section of the national route runs from a few miles south of Harrisburg, Pa., to the North Carolina border. Members make week end group trips under the leadership of experienced committee nearly every week, and on occasions when holidays coincide with Saturdays and Sundays more exten- sive journeys are made. Over the Memorial day week end, for example, a party of 50 hiked 48 miles over mountains and through gorges in the country near the headwaters of the Potomac. They spent four days ex- ploring the trails in the M elR National Forest, in West Virginia. The first two days the party made Elkins, W. Va., its headquarters and took a trip through the famous “Smoke Hole” gorge of the South Branch of the Potomac. They forded the river, waist deep in ice-cold water, five times, using bathing suits and hiking boots for their equipment, The party then divided, one group climbing Sen- eca Rocks and the other scaling North Fork Mountain, and the following day they ascended Bickles Knob. The leaders on this trip were Alvin Peter- son and Harold D. McCoy, both of Washington. At present the C. C. C. is doing a great deal of work on the main trail and on the development and exten- | sion of Skyline Drive, turning many of the veteran hikers to new explora- tions, particularly in the Maryland, West Virginia and the Southern Vir- ginia sections. The proximity of one C. C. C. camp has made the Sexton shelter unavallable for campers for the time being, but the matter is one of comparatively small importance | considering the many miles of trail | open and the scores of places where pleasant outings may be held in the hills. Information about the club and its activities is obtainable from the sec- retary, H. C. Anderson, 609 American Security & Trust Building. e MOVC to NCW Ofice. The PFlorida season, due to its mild climate in Winter, naturally is at its height when blizzards and sub- gero temperatures claim the North. Smart vacation bargain hunters, however, have learned that rents in the crowded Winter resort centers drop 50 to 75 per cent for the Summer season. The Seaboard Airline Rail- road points out that reduced fares are in effect on its trains—trains equipped with air-conditioned cars that have made rail travel a truly comfortable medium of hot-weather transporta- tion. Beaboard’s “circle tours of Flor- ida” include both coasts and the cen- tral part of the State without extra cost when round-trip tickets are pur- chased to Miami, West Palm Beach or intermediate points. Seaboard has eliminated Pullman surcharges on round-trip tickets. The Summer fleet to the South includes four air-condi- tioned trains, operating on speedier schedules. SIAIOARD is not alone in its efforts to tell the vacation world that cooling breezes from the gulf temper the Southern sun’s rays, that fishing is better in the Summer than in the Winter. B. R.
