Phor 1930—PAR'T S1A CLUBWOMEN OF THE NATION Mrs. Gregory Tells of Homemaking Center—Democratic Women to Hear Lecturer—Group Meetings Feature Cause and Cure of War Conference. BY CORINNE FRAZIER. Mrs. Charles E. Gregory, educational director of the New York State Feder- ation of Women's Clubs, while in Washington _recently conferring _witn Mrs. John F. Sippel, president of the General Federation revealed the details of a most unusual project being under- taken successfully in New York City by her State group, known as the Homc- making Center of the New York Feder- ation of Women's Clubs. It is the only one of its kind in the United States. ‘The center, according to Mrs. Greg- ory, has five distinct purposes: to serve as a club, an exhibit, a place of enter- tainment, of consultation and of re- search:. Hither come the bride to gain valuable housekeeping hints, the busi- ness woman who is carrying the double job of home maker and wage earner, the girl who wants to know how to de- velop her personality and to spend her cloming budget to the best advantage, the young man who desires to know the cost of running a home, the father and mother with their problems of child training and any one who contemplates buying a piece of equipment, a building material, fabrics, clothing or food and would like to study competing products before making the purchase. s solicited or soid, however. aking Center permits the exhibit of any manufacturer or retailer who =0 desires, provided his goods has passed a strict test of standards applied by a group of public institutions in- cluding the Bureau of Standards, the United States Bureau of Simplified Practice. the United States Bureau of Home Economics, the United States Bureau of Foods and Drugs, United States Fire Underwriters’ Laboratory, Investigation Commission of Architects and Engineers, United States Electrical Testing Laboratory, the American Li- brary Association and a group of well known publications. The center makes no charge for the consultation service guide a child’s emotional life for sound mental health—these are the sort of | speakers who are brought to the center by this service.” * * ok % ‘The second of a series of lectures on “New Interpretations In American His- tory” being given on Friday mornings at the Women's National Democratic Club by Dr. W. S. Holt, Ph. D., assist- ant professor at George Washington University, will be held Friday morning from 11:30 to 12:30 o'clock. Dr. Holt will speak on “The Economic lnurpreuuon of the constltuuon" this His subject last Friday was “The Mndem Explanation of the American Revolution.” The speaker will remain for luncheon to answer informally any questions that may be asked. Non-mem- bers will welcome. Senator Millard Tydings of Maryland and William Jennings ice, one-time Minister from the United States to Panama, discussed the pros and cons of prohibition at the Women's Na- tional Democratic Club forum luncheon last Monday. Mr. Price spoke in the place of Senator Thomas J. Walsh of Montana, who was to have upheld the effirmative end of the issue. Senator Tydings took the negative. It was one of the largest luncheons in the history of the club, more than a hundred guests being included in the company. * ok ok K Featuring the fifth annual conference on the cause and cure of war, which closed here Friday night with emphasis laid upon securing the entry of the United States into the’ World Court as the immediate major issue, were the four group meetings—a new feature of the gathering— out of v.hich there came nine spontanepus points of discussion from the women that were considered of exceptionul value. These points, upon which all of the groups nreea were considered so in fact, that the resolutions committee pounced upon them immediately and recommended in the final session Friday that the natfonal committee which for- mulates the policies of the conference, use them as a basis for the plan of work to be suggested to the 11 co-operating women's organizations of the conference body. The first two points unanimousl fiYx agreed upon, of course, had to do wi the peace pact and the World Court: the first urges all of the conferring or- ganizations to P““m" understandin of the full implications of the general pact for the renunciation of war and to study ways {nwhuh machinery can be built for making it effective. The second asks for support of the ratification by the Senate of the protocols for the ac- cession of the United States in the World Court. The others are: No. 3, to promote education on the significance of the Inter-American Arbitration Treaty and to work for its ratification; No. 4, to study the position of the United States in relation to the League of Na- tions and to work toward the stunzth- ening of co-operation with it; carry on our efforts directed toward the success of the London Naval Confer- ence and to continue the education for reduction of all type of armaments; 6, to study the economic problems which endanger the relations of the nations, with especial emphasis on tariff poli- cies and the competitive search for raw materials and for markets; 7, to study the problems which arise out of the in- tervention of the United States inweak- er countries in its efforts to protect life lnd‘?l’apeny, 8, to improve the methods of education and effectively meet efforts which seem to be directed toward the system; 9, to study the extent and ef- fects of military training in schools and colleges. eery open fireplace. Count Anthony of Egmont, heir to the throne of Guelders, flees the court of Charles, Duke of Burgundy, when he finds that his fiancee, Lady Catharine, does mot care for him. During his wanderings, he bejriends a merchant— Philip Danvelt, who takes him to the home of his prospective father-in-law. There Count Anthony meets Johanna, Philip’s fiancee. They are immediately attracted with each other and, although Count Anthony goes away, he soon re- turns. Meanwhile the Duke has offered a reward for the count’s arrest, al- though he' is traveling incognito. A wandering friar sees him and guesses his secret. The man goes immediately had driven from her cheeks. ‘Together now they rode into the town and parted in the market place, Coune Anthony and his servant going to the Zeelanderhof, while Johanna returned home accompanied by Danvelt and followed by Jan. The count sat his horse at the inn door and watched them out of sight. As they were about to turn the corner they looked back, first Johanna, then Dan- velt. They waved to him and he doffed his bonnet in reply, little dreaming of the vastly different circumstances in which next her should discover him. Then he Xefic l deep llxh and walked his horse into N Grth 0962. 4044, 1. .-n. Sles. Uish! Into that same inn ylrd leu thln an hour later clanked a company of six men-at-arms, from the heads of whose lances fluttered pmx}le bannerols bear- ing the cross of St. They were led by an officer wearing a white sur- coat over his mail and a little scarlet plume in his steel cap. Dismounting, ha inquired of the landlord for a gentleman calling himself Anthony Egmont. The landlord, relieved that the busi- ness of these Burgundians was not with himself, promptly conducted the officer t> the room where Count Anthony sat alone with his perplexities. So_overmastering had been his feelings for Johanna. that, he now pereelved. he had yielded to them blindly an« utter disregard to every other eomlu- eration. Relentlessly they had brought him back from land as soon as he arrived there, and remorselessly had they closed his senses to all perce] uon of the :ln:umunce.l in which bol them were placed. It had remained for an act of gener- csity on the part of Danvelt to check him in his reckless course and bid him consider whither he was heading, bring him to ponder certain contingencies of cxpediency and of honor. At the risk, perhaps, of his own life, Danvelt had ridden to warn the man who would have stolen Johanna from her burgher lover. That was how the count now re- garded )f, If hitherto he had dis- counted without qualms any such aspect of his conduct, it was because Danvelt had appeared to him beneath consideration. Then a l:ng silence fell, which Johanna made no attempt to break. For some time now their horses had fallen to a walking pace. Count An- thony lsaned across and placed his gloved right hand on hers. “It was you, Johanna, who com- pelled my return. You knew it, child.” She shook her head. “How could I have such knowledge?" “How? It is the kind of knowledge that is imparted without words, in the slle{tt language in which soul talks to soul.” She dared not look at him, but kept her eyes on the red towers and massive ramparts of the town of Flushing which they were fast approaching. And then she became conscious, as did he, of hoof beats behind them. A moment later came a hail and then two horsemen swept alongside and the first of these doffed his bonnet and revealed himself for Master Danvelt, never more inop- portune to her than in this momenl m.:m save you, Master Egmont,” have ridden hard to warn you.” “To_warn me?” greeting breathlessly delivered, “XI the count walted Then, too, it became necessary to ask himself to what end did he propose to snatch Johanna from another. Was he, a Prince of Guelders, prepared to make this burgher'’s daughter his princess? Even if he were, would such a thing be permitted him? And al- ternatively was he prepared to marry her at the price of renouncing his rights to the throne of Guelders? Did the clear duty imposed upon him by his birth even permit him to do so much? These were the questions he was again balancing in his mind to perplex and distract him. Answers he had not found to any when the governor's offi- cer was admitted to his presence, unless it was a half answer supplied by his romantic fatalism, that Danvelt’s super- vention at the very moment when he was about to give his love for Johanna full expression was in ‘itself a sign. ‘Tormented and despairing, torn be- tween his love for Johanna and his duty to himself and to her, and even to Danvelt, he almost welcomed the in- terruption of his distract thoughts which the officer’s advent lf?o “By your good leave, my lord, I have orders concerning you.” Thus the offi- cer, his manner a careful blend of deference and firmness. “Concerning me?
