ROBSION, Whose husbard was promoted from the Lower House to succeed / Senator Sackett #° in the Senate. Harrls & Ewing. 13£és‘faent and First Lady Resume the Official Social Life at the White House Mrs. Duties—Judicial Dinner and Senate Recep- HOOVEI’. Convalescent. Rcassumes Her tion Listed in Early Schedule. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HE White House is resuming its normal meed of entertain- ing, twice interrupted, first by official mourning and then by the indispositicn of Mrs. Hoover resulting from a heavy cold, I and Thursday night the dinner to the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court will be given, while invitations were issued last week to a reception in honor of Senators Thursday evening, January 30. Last week the President entertained at dinner the Vice President, Mr. Curtis, an event with scarcely any other official phase, and fol- lowed by a musicale. The latter event was charmingly arranged, Mr. Louis Graveure, tenor, giving several groups of songs and the Aguilar Lute Quartet of Madrid furnishing the other numbers. ITH the Chief Justice and Mrs. Taft in the South, where the former is rapidly recuperating from a recent illness, the dinner Thursday will lcse its ranking guests. Justice and Mrs. Taft have longer figured in official scciety in Washington than almost any of its active members. The former first came into society here when in 1875 his father, the late Alphonso Taft, was Secretary of War; again in 1890 when he was Solicitor General of the United States, later cn in 1900 as president of the United States Philippine Commission, in 1908 as Secretary of War, then as President of the United States in 1909 and to the Supreme Court bench in 1921. Mrs. Taft has always figured with him in his Washington life since 1890, and they are both looked upon as old Washingtonians rather than high officials. THE Congressicnal Club, which ranks next to the White House as an official point for entertaining, will hold its second big recep- tion of the season Tuesday evening, having the Vice President as its honor guest and his sister, Mrs. Gann, sharing honors with him, while on Monday afternoon Mrs. Gann will be the guest of Mrs. Homer Hoch, chairman of the hostess committee of the club, of which committee she has for several years been a member. Wife of Senator Dale of Harris & Society Hostesses Announce "At Homes On Dates Scheduled 'OCIETY in its most charming aspect met Thursday at the National | Women’s Country Ciub for its formal opening, and had merely names been given the event might readily have seemed a White House reception or a night of grand cpera. The atmosphere of the club is very appealing to women in and out of official life in need of rest and recreation, and one can scarcely visit a nook or corner in the quaint building without being charmed with some unusual and attractive article or feature. Just as the Congressional Club fills its Pplace to perfection, so will this country club, only on a wider scale. | nesday in Honor of Her Niece—Other Noteworthy Events Listed.
