THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., JANUARY 19, 1930—PART THREE. -Presx'der;t of Women's Official Club Makes It Popular Rendezvous Brilliant Receptions Sched- | uled There for Head of Nation and the Vice Presi- dent, Respectively. Under the presidency of a New Eng- 1and Senator’s wife, Mrs. Porter H. Dale, the Congressional Club steps very much to ‘he front as a great social and po- litical factor in Washington life. Re- membering the scant companies that greeted great men at some former re- ceptions at the club which is made up, of the wives, mothers, sisters and daugh- ters of Senators and Representatives, Mrs. Dale determined to make the re- | ception to President Hoover the biggest and most enthusiastic held there in years, and she did. By the time Presi- dent Hoover arrived—Mrs. Hoover was still confined to the White House by a | cold—the large audience room”of the club barely afforded standing room | for the guest of honor. Senators in Jarge numbers, who have not often fre- quented the club, were there, and the House was splendidly represented. As the company thinned out many of the older men danced and the party was informal and gay. Just such another party awaits Vice President Curtis with the greater part of the Upper House on deck. One scarcely realizes how she does it, but Mrs. Dale is drawing strongly to the club as the biggest social factor in Washington. The club is the first of- ficial body to issue invitations reading “the Vice President and Mrs. Gann.” Tt is one of the particular aims of Mrs. Dale to bring out the talents of women in official life, and Friday after- noon .drs, Hiram 3ingham, who before marriage and after was a much traveled woman, gave a violin recital that charmed not only the members of the ;lub but the music crities who heard er. Senator and Mrs. Dale have been in congressional life in Washington since 1915, and Senator Dale was pres- ent in the Vermont mountain home of the late Col. John Coolidge and an official witness when President Cool- idge took the oath of office as Presi- dent. But Mrs. Dale is not dependent upon her husband for leadership in politics or social life. She is a handsome, graceful woman, past middle life, with gray hair, a charming smile and what the world knows as style. She knows good pictures and owns several fine paintings, besides a wonderful tapestry showing one of Boucher’s best—the muse of music entertaining Apollo. Some years ago Senator and Mrs. Dale bought a fine old house—reputed to be haunted—on Capitol Hill, and within it was a treasure house of antiques, many of the beautiful things having great historic value. This residence ‘was sold to the Women'’s Party, and re- cently they bought one of the largest estates in the District, Argyle, at Eight- eenth and Varnum streets, and when the fine old residence is restored and placed in order they will move their treasures there. In the meantime Mrs. Dale is holding her own “at homes” in the Congressional Club and inducing all other women of Congress to use the club for this purpose. Mrs. Dale’s mother was a Kentucky belle, but Mrs. Dale has spent almost her entire life in Boston. She was raised and edu- cated there, taught school there and 5 Shall 1 Wear Them Long or Short? was married to Senator Dale in Ed- ward Everett Hale's church. She was graduated from the Teachers’ College and she is a little prouder of her years of teaching than of almost any other period of her life. .
