The traffic director’s. office recently found it necessary to petition the Dis- trict Commissioners for permission to ban parking on the south side of F street between Thirteenth and Four- teenth streets northwest. ‘They set forth as a reason for their request that they hoped this proposed ban would help to relieve some of the present congestion that exists on T street at certain periods of the day. No doubt this move will meet with the ‘hearty approval of all motorists who have attempted to drive on F street for some time past. F Street Difficulties. ‘The difficulties an average motorist encounters while attempting to drive on F street, as well ag the snail's pace he is usually forced to proceed at, are too well known to need repetition here. Sufficient to say that he not only finds it difficult to drive there, next to impossible to find a parking space as well. ‘This parking problem in the down- town section is no inconsequential one. It is a grave problem that vitally affects the prosperity of all of the downtown stores. It is a self-evident truth that the more motorists are in- convenienced downtown the more of them will patronize less congested sec- tions. You oxly have to take an hour's drive to see how far such a movement already has progressed. Where millions and millions of dollars are invested in building sites that de- pend upon retail trade for their chief value, you can easily see that anything which might affect the general public’s regard for that particular section is & very serious thing. It doesn't take much sometimes to turn the tide of popular favor first one way and then the other. There are plenty of towns and cities where the vicinity and see what I could learn, I was only too glad to do so. Well, I learned a few new things as well as seeing other to con- firm my previous opinions on the same subjects. However, I came to the conclusion after some time spent observing things myself and also seeking the opinion of some of the policemen whose duty it is to direct traffic on'F street that there is but one thing needed to relieve the present congestion. And that is to put & ban on this strictly taxicab habit of “cruising,” or “crabbing,” as it is known in public circles. There is absolutely no need of all this present procession “of taxicabs on F street. In the first place, there isn't a legitimate call for one-tenth of the number that are usually to be found there, and, in the second place, they all have plenty of parking space assigned to them now. Just around the corner they will be empty. Yet no one else dare park on them under penalty of the law. Go to Stand for Cab. Some people will probably say, of course, that the only time they use cabs is when it is raining, and at such times they like to be able to hail one without walking too far. Well, the an- swer to this is that if taxicabs were ‘forced to remain on their stands until they were hailed, and the stands al- |tions. lowed to remain in their present loca- tions—no one would have to walk far. And what is more—people wouldn't be yelling at every cab they saw passing. Instead, they would proceed to the nearest cab stand, and if a cab wasn't on the stand, they would only have to wait a few moments because cabs would be forced under the new ruling to re- turn_to their stands.
