President and First Lady Held in City Over Sunday First Time in Many Weeks Obliged to Forego Outing on the Rapidan and| Occupy Time in Extending Hospi- tality to Visitors. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HE President and Mrs. Hoover are spending the first Sunday in many weeks in the White House, with no signs of making a trip to their Virginia fishing lodge for some time. While there were no large social events of the week to schedule them, there was constant hospitality extended to visitors, the former Becretary of State and Mrs. Kellogg and the Governor of Michigan and Mrs. Fred W. Green being the -distinguished out-of-town guests at one of thelr little dinner parties. : I‘l‘ is likely the President and a party of friends will witness the cup races Friday or Saturday from the official boat, the Mendota, as guests of Rear Admiral Billard. Mrs. Edward Everett Gann will | assist Mrs. Billard in receiving, and others with her will be Mrs. Crapster, wife of Comdr. F- C. Crapster of the Mendota; Mrs. Jones, wite of Comdr. Chester Jones, and Mrs. H. G Bradbury of Baltimore. CARDS of. invitation for, a place on board the Mendota are being sought by many, and the members of the Diplomatic Corps and the officials in Washington are particularly interested in the races Friday and Saturday of this week. The invitation cards are quite impressive looking, bearing at the top a miniature gold cup repre- senting the President’s trophy. A group of young girls will assist in serving tea, and Miss Dorothy Dial, one of them, will operate a 200-horsepower Gar Wood boat in the women’s races. Tl-m Potomac, that a few years ago boasted a few small and homely craft, is now fairly alive with nifty little launches, and ofMcials and fashionable folk who formerly never cast an eye that way unless the Mayflower was going out, are buying boats of their own or being entertained cn the boats of others. Senator Davis A. Reed of Pennsylvania and Senator Lawrence C. Phipps of Colorado seem to have gone into partnership on a brand-new speed boat that !oes mnn§ ke mad through the usually péaceful waters of the otomac. 1t is a small, but high-powered Gar Wood. Serator Phipps is captain and Senator Reed, engineer, but they each may claim relief from duty while they entertain guests on board. ¥ Secretary of State and Mrs. Stimson moved into their charm- ing new home, the Oaks, on Woodley lane yesterday and a rare treat awaits their guests at the opening of the social season, for the old residence is alive in interest with the many beautiful things from about the world. and especially from the Orient, recently installed there, Best of all, however, the Secretary will have ample room for his young menagerie. He has a score of pets, some of them quite unusugi. He is not establishing & precedent in installing a parrot in the household of the Secret: of State, Old Soak’s predecessor, , having reigned supreme in the household of the late Secretary of State Wlfihm Jennings Bryan.
