The need of a concerted war on can- cer was pointed out by Dr. Mayo. who said 38,000 persons died of cancer in this country last year. The number of deaths has grown, he said, from 83 h_l every 100,000 several years ago to 127 in every 100,000 in recent years. Y.W. C. A. EVENTS MARK HOLIDAY WEEK Series of Christmas Programs to Include Provision for Gifts to Children. The Young Women's Christian Asso- ciation is planning a series of celebra~ tions during the week in honor of Christmas, beginning with a program Tuesday by the various clubs of the business and professional women's de- partment, at which gifts for children will be presented. Wednesday evening the K. E. Y. Club of the industrial department will have a Christmas party, followed by a supper and entertainment Thursday night un- der the auspices of the Thursday In- dustrial Club and the Blue Triangle Club. A Christmas open house will be con- ducted Friday and gifts will be dis- tributed to children. For this event the administration building will be con- verted into a manor house of Old Eng- land, and the ladies of the manor will receive their friends in true Devonshire fashion. In Barker Hall, the children will present a play and a choir will sing the cantata, “Child Jesus.” The Girl Reserve celebration will take place next Sunday afternoon from 4 to 6 o'clock. A play, “The Christmas Spirit,” will be presented under the direction of Miss Sheila Doody. The “Toy Shop” will be a feature of the evening's entertainment. The music_department will have a part in the Christmas celebrations be- ginning December 23, for carols will be sung at all Y. W. centers during the ‘week. - PROHIBITION GAUGERS ARE NEEDED BY BUREAU 260 Positions Open Throughout Country, With Salary Range of $2,000 to $2,500. ‘The Prohibition Bureau is in need of 260 storekeeper-gaugers, who will have custody of the keys and supervision over all operations at industrial alcohol plants, distilleries, wineries, etc., throughout the country. The Civil Service Commission will re- ceive applications until December 31. Appointments will be made as soon as the positions can be filled. Entrance salaries range from $2,000 to $2,500 a year. A requirement is at Jeast one year's experience in a chem- ical or physical laboratory or in al! chemical piant or in pharmaceutical work, or as gauger, storekeeper-gauger ,or as Government inspector at such plants for which the positions are open. $750,000 DAMAGE SUIT FILED BY TULSA BROKER Fee in Negotiations for Manhat- tan Oil Co. Assets Is Sought. By the Associated Press. KANSAS CITY, December 15.—R. R. Crawford, Tulsa broker, today filed suit for $750,000 damages in_Circuit Court here against seven officials of the Man- hattan Oil Co. and two other men con- nected with the company. Crawford alleged he entered into an oral agreement with the nine men Oc- tober 8, 1927, to procure a purchaser for the assets of the Manhattan company, to furnish the stock or to procure an exchange of the stock of the Manhat- tan company for stock in thw Inde- pendent Oil & Gas Co. In his petition Crawford says he was to be paid “the usudi fee,” but received nothing The suit is against the following offi- cials of the Manhaitan company: E. W. Goebel, president; F. E. Jones, stock- holder; A. R. Jones, stockholder; O. G. Bitler, vice president; J. H. Reverley, stockholder; J. P. Howe, a vice presi- dent, and Frank Brown, stockholder. C. F. Alexander and C. M.
