I could have picked my teeth with a knife and still no one would have given me a tumble.” Directors don’t mind working with dogs, especially the better grade that come to them through the kennels of Carl Spitz and Curly Renfrew, Hollywood's two foremost trainers. Spitz or Renfrew either escort their charges to the stages themselves or gend along expert aids who seldom encounter trouble putting an ani- mal through its prescribed paces. Other Animals, Too. ‘The kennel chief gets a copy of the script in advance, just as the actors do. He knows exactly what stunts his animals will be called on to perform and trains them accord- ingly for several weeks before shoot- ing actually begins. Few of the top dogs ever blow their cues. And di- rectors never have to worry about an animal turning on them, as hu- man actors occasionally do, and saying, “Listen, I think I could play this scene better if you'd let me do it my way.” But, while dogs are leading the way, animals of every other variety are also adding to the confusion of the glamour lads and lassies. An alligator and a jaguar steal plenty of interest in “Dr. Cyclops,” while bats will make the atmosphere of “The Ghost Breakers” grim and foreboding. Cats performed in “The Way of All Flesh,” “A Date With Destiny” and “The Cat and the Canary.” In “Safari” lions and elephants, a8 well as many other jungle habi- tues, were prominent, and in “The Beachcomber” a performing dog (remember Dudley?) had a prom- inent part. “The Thin Man” series depends, of course, on Asta, the wire-haired trickster, for a large share of its success. The Hopalong Cassidy series is introducing a rooster that is expected to become almost as important to hero Bill Boyd as his famous horse, Topper. Elephants Are Paid Well. Nowadays, the good animal actor draws a sum equal to and frequently greater than that paid a supporting player. One of the Spitz or Renfrew kennel stars will often bring his master as much as $200 for a day’s work, and a week’s work is usually the least guarantee. Elephants are listed at a higher scale than dogs, but not because they're smarter. The overhead on groceries is much higher. A trained goose works for $60 a day. One goose of outstanding intelligence re- cently drew $100 a day over a nine- day period. After that profitable chore, the goose retired. She is back now with a brood of little goslings that will be trained for movie work. Lions or tigers, of the sort that growl ferociously and look daggers at actors and audience (but are really completely docile and harm- less) may be hired for $75 to $100 a day, but they're loafing most of the time, House cats are in the high-salary bracket, too, this year. The price for a super-smart pussy has leaped from $25 to $50 a day. That’s be- DANCE PLAYHOUSE EVELYN DAVIS, DIRECTOR DANCE CONCERT SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 8:30 P.M. Some Stars Refuse Despicable. Roles, Others Grab Them ’ By Robbin Coons, Associated Press Staff Writer, Is 1t good to bs bad in the movies? The weight of evidence ‘n the affirmative hasa't kept Don Ameche from declining to play a tough boy in “The Night of January 16.” Tha‘'s the & suit in his direction, HOLLYWOD. mnnlymemdrmbmtumddmthoplnure although Don has remained tight-lipped on the subject especially since Paramount tossed ‘The evidence dM.n‘t keep Virginia Bruce from walking out on “And oaliomase Sontralininosn drnal it linin One Was Beautif: when she learned her role was that of a hit- and-run killer, “I think a person like that is de- spicable,” she said. She felt strongly enough about it that she asked for her release from M.-G.-M, (which she wanted any- way) rather than play it. George Raft used to quarrel with Paramount continually over his gangster roles; walked out firmly on “The Story of Temple Drake,” which had cast him as a degenerate. ‘Walter Pidgeon played a dastard- ly villain in the new “Dark Com- mand,” but you get the feeling he held back on the villainous spirit to which the character of a ravaging, cold-blooded frontier raider was en- titled. You get the feeling he was thinking, “I don’t wanna be that bad—nobody’ll love me!” Despite the evidence, that'’s the war cry of a good many actors. They just don’t wanna be bad. Bette Pays Not to Be Good. The evidence for wickedness? Look it over: Among the top chnrncters in cur- rent popularity is the little girl who isn't there, “Rebecca”—a double-dyed hellion. Bette Davis is almost allergic to movie virture. She got there in the first place through sordid, unsavory Mildred in “Of Human Bondage,” and most of her subsequent hero- ines have been vixens in varying degree. Bette once paid $150,000 to avoid being “good.” That's what it cost her, in suspended salary, ate tornéy’s fees and incidentals, the time she walked out on the namby- pamby heroine of “God’s Country and the Woman.” Viven Leigh is current argument No. 1 against screen virture—or do you think Scarlett O‘Hara is a Sun- day school model of behavior? Robert Montgomery, the light comedian, is still reaping plaudits for his two escapes from consistent if lightheaded virtue. These come in “Night Must Fall” and “The Earl of Chicago.” In both he played a loathsome if amusing character. Basil Rathbone, whose movie mis- deeds stop virtually nowhere, fur- thers his claim on the bad-boy- championship in “A Date with Destiny.” * The Horror Boys Do Well. Erich von Stroheim was once billed as “The man you love to hate,” but despite the “hatred” he’s still around, and with a new flicker Nm (“T was an Adventuress”) tacked to record, his 4 ‘The horror boys— Karloff, Lugosl, Peter Lorre, who never really frighten anybody except in publicity blurbs—are all doing vreny well despite their gruesome “pasts.” Kay Francis, after a long series of saccharine, mflflctn‘ mother roles, made a comeback as a poisonous dame in “In Name Only” and re- cently cinched a deal for light comedy honors in “It's & Date” proving that one meanie doesn’t necessarily lead to five more. Wallace Beery's specialty s “lovable villains,” which is as far 25 most movie stars will go in con- cessions to wickedness, Raft, the squawker against gangster roles, still plays them. But his new mobsters have qualities. They died “good”—which is enough to satisfy most heavies and the Hays office. And Virginia Bruce, who wouldn't play a “despicable” character, is all for parts that are not “too sweet.” Byt—is it good to be bad in pic- tures? There isn’t any general specific answer. It's a matter of individual cases—and there’ll al- Ways be new ones coming up, MacArthur (Continued From First Page.) Kelloway knew of such a men and wrote for full particulars. The answer asked for $5,000 for a prom- ising 2-year-old. Bacon thought the price a little too steep.
