f’Book Burnelgg' Give America Opporfunity, Penwomen Hear $5,000,000 Appropriation Urged to Bring European Volumes to Safety Here . With “book-burners on the march abroad,” now is an opportune time for this country to gather into its hational library “as many European books as ships can bring and money ean buy,” a Library of Congress official said yesterday before the National League of American Pen- Women, John Vance, chief of the law divi- slon of the Library of Congress, suggested an appropriation of $5, 000,000 might be sought from Con- @gress for such a purpose. He chided the Nation at large | for its limited library facilities in comparison with European coun- tries. “We read and buy fewer books, in proportion to size, than the little nations now falling into the laps of the dictators,” he said. “There are 40,000,000 American citizens without library facilities.” Library a “Choice Jewel.” He called the Library of Con- gress “one of our choicest jewels, | but continued: “We might say we ! have one nice little library here | where Great Britain, Germany and | the only supplies bound from Amer- | other countries have a half a dozen.” Paris would be worth saving just for its wonderful little book stalls | alone the Seine, he said. Mr. Vance ‘was one of several speakers who ad- dressed. the penwomen at the tradi- tional authors’ breakfast which opened the biennial convention at the Willard Hotel. Approximately 300 members were present and more are expected to arrive for the official opening tomorrow. The sessions will | continue through Friday. As a novelty, the penwomen this Yyear had only men speakers at the breakfast, though member com- | posers were represented on the music progtam, and a French dancer, Madelein Lazard, gave a performance. | The List of Speakers. Dr. Hugh Findlay, director, | Landscape Architecture Department of Columbia University, and author ©f books on gardening; Dr. Joseph Quincy Adams, director of the Folger Shakespeare Library; Gor-| ham Munson, biographer of Robert Frost; Dr. Elgin Groseclose, author | of “Ararat,” and Labert St. Clair, | author of “I've Met the Folks,” were the speakers. Mrs. Audreyl Wurdemann Auslandey, poet and national president of the league, turned the chair over to her nhus- band, Dr. Joseph Auslander, con- sultant on poetry at the 1..ilu'a:'yI of Congress, during the program. Bishop Julius, Walter Atwood, re- tired, of Arizona gave the invoca- tion. Michael Webroff, New York portrait painter and a baritone, was among the singers and was recalled for an encore. Introduced as a poet-gardener, Dr. Findlay in a philosophical ad- | dress, spiced with humor, developed a8 & .theme the importance -of | creating beauty to replace ugliness. | He urged the women, as gardeners, or as writers and artists, to regard beauty not as a luxury but a neces- sity. The soil, he said, is “God’s ambassador of truth.” No Design for Living. Dr. Groseclose declared that the world, in spite of its inventive| genius, has not yet produced a| “design for living” and offered this | as a challenge to those who deal; in the arts. Our systems today deal | with machines, not men, and money, not morals, he said. “Those who | deal in the arts are in a position | to deal with human beings as liv- | ing spirits,” he declared. | Dr. Adams, briefly discussing the Folger Library, stressed its scope and the varied nature of its collec- tion, declaring it covers the period | from the beginning of the Renais- | sance to the end of the Reforma- | tion. Not only does it cover belle ! lettres, he said, but every aspect of ' Choose from 150 New & Used DETSY ROSS SPINETS LESTER GRAND PIANOS & STUDIO CONSOLES A Wholesale Clearan.e of Great Proportions—New sand Used Piancs, Floor Sam- plos and Demonstrators political, economic and social life. He also emphasized that the library shows the culture of the ancestors of Americans just before:they trans- ferred their allegiance' to a new world. ‘The District branch of the league entertained the natianal president at a reception last night and several social events are scheduled for to- day. The national president’s re- ception will be given from 4 to 6 Eugene Meyer. Tonight an art buf- fet supper in:the Grafton Hotel Annex will precede thie formal open- ing of the national art exhibition, Several church choirs this morn- ing will present anthems by Amer- ican woman composers.
