Budge fo Tip Nefmen - During Free Clinic Here on May 4 Brother to Assist Don In Instruction Open To All Classes By BILL DISMER, Jr. Tennis instruction, with illustra- tions, by the reigning king of ’em all—J. Donald Budge—will be pro- vided Washington racketers free of charge at an open clinic, to be spon- sored by a national sporting goods firm on a public court here Satur- day, May 4 Coming just about the time that two of the city’s biggest net leagues inaugurate their schedules and a month before The Star sponsors the season’s first tournament, the clinic is timed to send local tennis off to a banner start. Brother Working With Don. Budge is scheduled to come here direct from the open tournament at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., but his appearance before a gathering of “students” will not be new to him. ‘The red-topped fireball conducted similar clinics throughout the South all last winter and his stop here will mark the start of visits throughout the Northern Atlantic seaboard this spring and summer. It is probable he will be accom- panied by his brother, Lloyd Budge, who started him on the court and has continued to coach him ever since. Lloyd, also a redhead, is a club professional in Michigan dur- ing the summer months and has Just completed a winter’s work at the Miami-Biltmore Club in Florida. He is older than Don, but said to be built along the same lanky lines as his more famed brother. If he comes, he doubtless will face his brother in an exhibition match, al- though none definitely is scheduled. Clinic Open to AlL ‘The visit is mainly for clinical purposes, with Budge giving instruc- tions, demonstrations and answers to questions thrust at him by any one from a perennial first-round loser to & Gil Hunt or a Barney Welsh. Public Parks officials are enthusi- astic over the imminent visit and are making plans to handle a large crowd. Neither the site nor time has been set definitely, but it prob- ably will be held at the Sixteenth and Kennedy streets N.W. courts and in the morning. Both are sub- Ject to change, C Club Cinder Meet Looms as Best in Event's History With more than 30 schools expect- ed to compete, the 22nd annual “C” Club track meet to be held at Cen- tral Stadium May 18 promises to be the best ever, accardmg to George Norris, treasurer. A host of stars from the North and South already have signified | their intention of - participating in| the big schoolboy event, which, due | to the cancellation of the Princeton scholastic meet, takes on added im- portance. The “C” Club gathering now is regarded as one of the big- gest and best in the country, rank- ing with those staged by Duke and Lafayette. A new trophy has been added to the list of prizes awarded annually. Known as the Cy MacDonald Tro- phy it will be given to the local echool scoring the most points. Other important awards are the Emory Wilson Trophy, which goes | to the school winning the meet, and the Cornell Alumni Trophy, for per- manent possession of which the meet must be won three times. The pres- ent trophy is the third, Tech and Eastern having won one each. 8o far schools from Washington, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and New Jer- sey are certain to be represented. Central heads the local list with a crack team, led by Ai Hayden, flashy quarter miler and brother of Byron Hayden, former Tech star. A highly touted mile relay team also will vie for Central. Another formidable nearby team will carry the colors of Washington-Lee, win- ner last year. Wally Legg, sensa- tional dash and hurdle man, and Bill Carr, half miler, are deemed certain point-getters for the Alex- andrians. Reports from the South indicate that Bob Gandtt of Durham High School of Durham, N. C,, is the lad to beat in the field events. Besides being judged the best schoolboy basket ball player in Virginia, Bob is quite a fellow with the javelin, discus and shot. He won all three events at the recent Duke meet. Another with a brilliant record is Bart Bartels of Newport News (Va.) High, a pole vaulter. Winner of the vault at Duke, Bartels is considered the best of a first-class Newport News team and a certain “C” Club winner, Umpires, Scorers Named For Eastern Sho’ Loop By the Associated Press. A THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., APRIL 31, 1940—PART FOUR. By PAUL J. MILLER. A week has passed and the United States chess champlonship pre- liminaries now in progress in New York City have yet to reveal a stellar genius among the 35 players seeking to qualify for the championship finals which begin April 27 at Hotel Astor. At first the contestants numbered 26. But (ieorge N. Treysman with- drew and the fleld was narrowed to 25, divided into three playing sections A, B, and C—including eight phym’—— each, with nine in Section C. Sections A and B. contest their games at the quarters of Manhattan and Marshall Chess Clubs in the order named, while Section C fre- quents the haunts of West Side Chess Club. Aside from Saturdays and Sun- days, formal play takes place every evening from 7 to 11 o'clock. Time limit for moves has been altered from the 40 moves for the first two hours and 20 moves an hour there- after that prevailed in the 1936 and 1938 championship congresses to the more liberal rule of 36 moves for the first two hours with subse- quent play at the rate of 18 moves an hour. The change to the slower mode of play was made to comply with the request of the national and international masters already seeded in the championship bracket. The seeded masters number 10 and from éach of the preliminary A, B and C sections two players will be promoted via competition to the seeded group, making a total of 16 that ‘will vie for the American title. Chairman L. Walter Stephens, di- rector of the preliminaries, an- nounces the make-up of the sections as follows: Section A—George Shainswit, Edgar T. McCormick, Albert S. Pink- us, Neil Bernstein, M. Saltzberg, Ed- ward S. Jackson, jr.; B. Winkler and Donald Hallman. Section B—Ted Barron, Sidney Bernstein, P. B. Bannister, Matthew Green, Karl Forster, Jack Soudakoff, Walter Murdoch and Bernard Friend. Section C—Herbert Seidman, Olaf Ulvestad, J. Fulop, Joseph Khotim- lansky, Walter Frere, Fred Reinfeld, J. S. Battell, J. Feldman and Miss Adele Raettig, the only woman en- tered in the men's preliminaries. At the Marshall Chess Club 10 women are battling for the national title of their sex. This year the women’s tourna- ment, the men’s preliminaries and | the American champlonship are sponsored by the United States Chess Federation, representing the amalgamated National and Amer- ican Chess Federations. For the first time in 40 years national chess | activities are marching under one | banner. Aye, crusade! Chess Problem No. 243. By L. KISS. Budapest. (Courtesy, British Chess Magazine.)
