The objectives of the crusade, to last for nine days, are to awake children to a full appreciation of the democratic way of life and to encourage them to “contribute as many pennies as they are a year old” to young war sufferers abroad. In a statement to Mrs. Fisher the President wrote: “The Children’s Crusade offers an excellent means for making Amer- ican children not only understand but feel the consequences of the breakdown of tolerance and fair play. “I can think of no greater service that could be rendered by our schools in these times than to make vivid to the children of America the plight and suffering of children of many races and religions in various parts of the world where the principles | of fair play set forth in our Biil of | Rights are ruthlessly disregarded. “Every child in America ought to feel vividly the suffering and loneli- ness experienced by the children who are victims of a racial and re- ligious intolerance. Such a feeling in the hearts of this generation of children will do much to preserve the sanity of goodwill against the onslaughts of bigotry. A homeless, insecure, frightened orphan is the symbol of lost freedom. Let our chil- dren understand this and be on | guagd against men and movements seeking to frighten and divide us, to arouse hatred and suspicions, and to undermine the fair rules of our American democracy.” Unemployed Women To Hold Session Here Delegates representing the Na- tion’s unemployed women will meet in Washington May 12 and 13 fo | & national conference of the “Daugh- ters of the American Depression” to protest W.
