| N atur_e’s Children ZINNIA (Crassina elegans). By LILLIAN COX ATHEY. ACH year the zinnie is becoming more popular. It thrives in any good, deep soil whether sandy or loamy. It loves a sunny spot, but does quite well in semi-shade. The seeds may be plant- ed indoors in late winter and the (young plants put out in May. Seeds may be sown outdoors in early May and the young plants thinned or trans- planted. Mexico grows some very beautiful sinnias. The flower lovers there have - developed some handsome varieties. ‘Texas and Colorado have their own special favorites. In all there are about 20 species. Most of them have entire heads. Of late years there are several hybrids with double rows or loose petals, and | all have a greater range of color andi size. There are beautiful new singles Brain Twizzler By PROF. J. D. FLINT. F1 WISH You { FLIES WOULD .| KEEP OFF and dovbles to be grown from seed now. Those we are most familiar with grow to be a foot or two or even more in height. These are the old-fashioned ones that once graced our grand- mother’s gardens. They have fewer petals and modest colors. They are the old standbys, furnishing up with cutting flowers all summer until the frost hoes them down. The newer shades have fanciful names, rows and rows of petals or double rows and even shaggy ones. Crimson, yellow, red, scarlet, orange, violet, purple and white are some of the shades. ~ The leaves are in pairs growing op- posite on the sturdy stem. The flowers are in terminal heads. The leaves are rough to the touch. A rasping sensation is experienced if they are handled. As far as we can find, the first knowledge of the zinnia was dated 1727. A professor of medicine at Cottingen named Johann Gottfried Zinn called the flower “youth and old age.” From 1727 to 1759 experi- ments were made to develop this flower. It now carries the name of its sponsor. Several florists have lately developed dwarf zinnias for edging plants. They are dependable, sturdy little plants, and add much to the old-fashioned garden. They grow from 3 to 12 inches in "height and are known as “Tom Thumbs.” In fact, these plants have been specially developed to produce ‘0“ ARCTIC IFLY . They were flies, of course, or had you guessed? They were lazily resting one day right on the rim of a big, old- fashioned alarm clock just above the 12 o'clock mark. It seemed to be quite & problem to think up some form of entertainment. Suddenly Hi said: “I have it, we'll run a race around the rim of the face of the clock. Just for fun Jet’s keep running until we arrive at the 12 o'clock marker at the same time.” This was agreeable to Si, so| they started out. Hi completed his | first trip around in 224 seconds, while | it took Si 364 seconds. ' How many | circuits did each make before they met at the same time at the 12 marker? (Answer on Page C-4.) There are several colors that prove most satisfactory. Then come the giants. They are zinnias 6 to 8 inches across, with a stem 3 or more feet high. The tall ones can be used for backgrounds and they come in several colors. These, too, are a robust race and add much color to the garden, as well as proving satisfactory ior cutting. The home grower may find great satisfaction developing a new species or color. Patience and steadfast pur- pose will bring ample rewards.
