Once both sides have put in a bid, the player, be- fore continuing, should ask himself two questions: first, “Can I be severely penalized if I make a further bid?” and, second, “Can I set the opponents if they continue?” There are occasionally hands in which Team A can actually make a game, but if Team B holds a higher- ranking suit, Team A may be outbid and be unable to obtain the contract. Had East passed, South would have been content to play for three spades; but when the game in hearts was bid, he felt that it be- hooved him to make a sacrifice bid of four spades. West wisely passed, but his partner followed up his pre- vious blunder by doubling. Owing to the fact that dummy held two kings in back of the respective aces, declarer had no trouble in fulfilling his doubled contract.
