Builders of machine tools have & 1arge enough backlog of orders to keep their plants occupied for the rest of the year, but the drop in orders is resulting in a material improvement in delivery dates. DECLARES NEW AUTO CREDIT More Caution Taken After Alarm That Buying Was Being Overdone. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, Nov. 4—Tighter, more exacting installment policies, self-im- Pposed by credit companies, are forcing & tapering in new auto financing. Credit is being extended with more caution, “doubtful” accounts are being weeded out, and potential repossessions of financed cars are being pared— through stiffening of terms. Out of every 10 new automobiles purchased last year six were bought on the installment plan. Thé tendency to liberalize terms had been extended in competition for new business until it was possible to buy an automobile for a few dollars down, with three years or more to pay. The trend alarmed business leaders who feared that installment buying was being overdone, and that the mounting volume of long-term con- sumer debt might put a deep dent in sales if general business suffered a lag. Acting in concert, leading auto- mobile finance companies on Septem- ber 1 fixed down payments on new cars at 33%; per cent, with 18 months to pay the remainder 6623 per cent in installments. The effect was immediate. Dollar volume of new automobile financing in September dropped 17.3 per cent under August, the largest August-to- September declme in post-depression years, and fell 3.3 per cent under September last year, the Department of Commerce estimated. Leading finance company executives are not depressed over the trimming of gross business totals. They feel a fringe of questionable new accounts has been lost, and that the remaining business is of better quality. Most im- portant, they believe installment buy- ing in the automobile field is on a sounder basis.
