RESCUE MISSID Member of House Will Commute to WILL CELEBRATF| HendteSatem Job First Anniversary of Insti- tution in Northeast Section to Be Observed. The Northeast Rescue Mission, founded a year ago by & group of young people in the Maryland Avenue Baptist Church, will celebrate its first aniversary tomorrow as the first and only mission of its kind in the North- east section of the city. A chance remark by Rev. W. A. Emmans, pastor of the Maryland Ave- nue Church, that a mission was need- ed in the section prompted a young people’s organization in the church to start collection of beds, blankets, cooking utensils and other furnishe ings. A cash donation of the first month’s rent on a building selected for the mission brought the project & step nearer realization. Last January 15, 13 men found shelter and food in the new house on the first night of its operation. In recent months an average of 50 men & day have received two meals a day and lodging. It has been necessary on several occasions for the men to sleep in the chapel because of over- crowded conditions. It is planned, however, if sufficlent funds can be raised, to add a second story. A $2,000 addition already has been added to the rear of the building. Religious services are held in the chapel twice a day, at 6:30 am. and 7:30 pm. All men staying at the mission are required to attend. The aim of the mission, according to T. L. Holmes, superintendent, is rehabilita- tion of the men with the idea of re- turning them to their homes. The house is operated tnrough stores’ donations of food, plumbing fixtures and general household equip- ment and by cash donations made by churches and individuals in the Northeast section of the city. George J. Bates Will Serve Out Term as Mayor of City. Representative George Joseph Bates, who came to Congress still retaining the position of mayor of the little town of Salem, Mass, is slated to fill the only Republican vacancy on the House District Committee. And Chairman Norton of the com- mittee, who carries the unofficial title of “mayor of Washington,” will be placed in the position of working with a real mayor. Bates has been mayor of Salem for 13 years. His term has another year to run, and he does not propose to give up the post in the meantime. In fact, he said the Salem government had formally petitioned him to serve out his term, and he agreed to do 80 without compensation. For the next year Bates will be forced to commute between Washing- THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 1837. ton and Salem over the week end to run his office there. “It's going to be hard work” he admitted, “but the government of i Salem is so well I can organized P supervise all of its week's activities on Friday and Saturday.” Bates has the reputation of being one of the outstanding authorities in Massachusetts on municipal finance and administration. Incidentally, he just the type Mrs. Norton has wanted on her committee—men who under- stand the intricate problems of city government and can aid her in han- dling legislation for the District. Bates will replace former Represen= tative Clare Fenerty of Pennsylvania, who was defeated in the November election. CHEST CLINICS SET By & Staff Correspondent of The Star.
