Dirksen, Republican, of Illinois, ranking mi- nority member of the House District Committee, was assigned today to the powerful Appropriations Commit- fee—an assignment that ordinarily would prevent him from serving on other committees. Dirksen, through the Republican leadership of the House, has ar- ranged to continue his service on the District Comymittee, where he ex- pects to take a prominent part in the impending study of the proposed new basis of fiscal relationship between the United States and the District @s recommended in the Jacobs report. Dirksen was one of the most active members on the District Committee in the last Congress and sponsored & number of bills affecting Washing- ton. The one which brought him into the local limelight, however, would have liberalized the liquor control act to permit the sale of liquor by the drink from 12 midnight Sat- urday to 2 a.m. Sunday and on Sun- day from 1 p.m. to 12 midnight. Dirksen recently introduced the liberalized liquor law bill in a modified | form. It specifically prohibits Sune | day sales, but would allow hotels, | restaurants, night clubs and ozher» establishments having “on sale” li- | censes to serve drinks from 12 mid- | night Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. ‘He also plans to introduce another | bill to amend the liquor control act | so0 that liquor by the drink can be | served over lunch counters like beer | and wine.
