Police Chief Ernest W. Brown has declared war on bootleg coal dealers who have been selling thousands of tons in Washington since the cold weather set in without having licenses to do business in the District. Maj. Brown ordered all policemen to be on the lookout for violations. This action was taken at the request of the coal section of the Merchants and Manufacturers Association, Coal dealers must pay a $10 license fee in the District to defray the cost of inspection and regulation. Fly-by- night or bootleg dealers are operating, it was said, without restriction. At this time of year hundreds of trucks come in from the mining sec- tions with bootleg coal which they sell at cut rates. The police were ordered to notify all coal dealers throughout the various precincts that licenses must be ob- tained in 10 days. Cases against vio- lators will be turned over to the cor- poration counsel for prosecution, it was said. {FIFTH VICTIM IN CRASH OF CAR AND TRUCK DIES 13-Year-Old Girl Only Occupant of Auto to Survive Collision at Glenwood, Va. Orchestra Couldn't “Get Hot"” for Roosevelt Celebration. COLUMBIA, 8. C., November 5 (#). —The W. P. A. Orchestra, it was ad- mitted yesterday, just couldn’t “get hot” despite President Roosevelt's election. Summoned to play for a victory rally attended by 600 persons, the orchestra was informed by Chairman | James H. Hammond that “the people want to dance now “Dance,” came the reply, “why, this is a concert orchestra.” It developed the orchestra didn’t | have dance music. | A dance orchestra was hastily called in. . Punt Nets Player a Bird. DOLAND, S. D. (#.—A halfback flushed three pheasants when retriev- ing a ball from a field of stubble dur- ing a punting drill. At the same time Dale Youngren punted, the ball hitting one of the pheasants and Poultry Specialist Also Predicts Large Crop of Chickens This Fall. BY the Associated Pres: COLLEGE PARK, Md., November 5.—Turkey dinners on Thanksgiving day will be the cheapest in years for Marylanders, in the opinion of Wade H. Rice, poultry specialist of the University of Maryland Extension Service. Rice, completing a survey of ex- pected Fall and Winter poultry prices, said Maryland, together with the rest of the country, will have one of the largest turkey crops in history this season. In addition, Rice estimated the crop of broiler and frier chickens will be more than twice as large as the average for the last five years. He said an increase in broiler pro- duction, coupled with high feed prices resulting from Summer droughts, will force the sale by farmers of un- usual quantities of young poultry stock. Fried or roast chicken dinners— even turkey dinners—on Thanksgiv~ ing, he said, probably can be served by an average family as cheaply as good quality cuts of red meat. Juryman Too Big for Service. Because & juryman was so big he| could not get into the jury box a Brighton, England, and because all at- tempts to assist him proved futile, the court discharged him from service. PREMIER BLUM HAILS ROOSEVELT’S VICTORY BY the Associated Press. PARIS, November 5.—Socialist Pre- mier Leon Blum last night said the re-election of President Roosevelt “will be interpreted by the entire world as & success for democracy.” “I rejoice in the result of the elec- tion,” he said, “first, because it keeps in power a man whose exceptional gifts of intelligence, courage and per- sonality are admired everywhere, and, secondly, because his re-election will be interpreted by the entire world as & success for democracy. ‘His re-election will prove to inter- national opinion that a.great flow of ideas in a free country can triumph over all obstacles whatever they may be. “It (re-election) will bring hope and encouragement to international democracy because to the entire world President Roosevelt personifies with particular strength that ideal of jus- tice towards which all free people and democratic government itself aim.
