_RAILROAD BONDS FIN LEAD IN UPTURN Demand Emphasizes Need of Institutions for Funds Outlet. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 3.—In the busiest Saturday session since Febru- ery 8, the bond market moved higher today with rail issues clicking off good gains. ‘Turnover for all bonds totaled $11,- 254,000, par value, with the domestic corporate list accounting for more than $10,000,000; foreigns, $780,000, and governments, $330,000. Last Sat- urday the aggregate was $9,185,000. Demand for rail loans emphasized the need of insurance and banking institutions for outlets for accumu- lated idle capital. These large-scale investors are said to be finding it in- creasingly difficult to plug up holes left in their portfolios by redemptions of high and medium coupon honds. The rise in carloadings for the latest week to the best level since 1930 was said to have encouraged buying of low and medium-priced carrier liens. New tops for the year were estab- lished by some Erie, Nickel Plate, Bouthern Railway and New York Cen- tral bonds. Notable headway was shown by New Orleans, Texas & Mex- ico 5!3s at 53, up 3: Missouri Pacific 5s “F” at 442, up 23;: Ann Arbor 4s at 76, up 4, and St. Paul 5s at 23%, up 1. The Associated Press averages for 20 rails moved further into new high ground for the year, gaining 3 of a point to 97.5. The average of 10 util- ity bonds equaled its high at 103, up .1 of a point. The industrial and low yield groups held unchanged and the | Joreign gained a bit. | Gains in the United States Govern- ment section extended to 5/32 of a point. There were several minor set- backs. CHICAGO GRAIN By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, October 3.—Two cents a | bushel soaring of wheat at Liverpool did much to impart strength today to wheat values here. A stimulating factor in Liwerpool, cables said, was word of hot winds | causing crop damage to wheat in Aus- | tralia. Special mention was made of injury done in the large wheat pro- ducing province of New South Wales. At $1.15 for December wheat in Chi- cago, however, selling increased, and | something of a setback took place. July contracts, representing the 1937 domestic wheat harvest, proved to be | the most vulnerable to selling and| soon weakened to 98%; cents, as against 99!, cents touched earlier. | Grlm range at principal markets toda Wheat— High.
