lflUL'HHEIM HE €01 | SETS RACE MARK Count Arthur Is Gold Cup Victor—Bushranger Wins Steeplechase. By the Associated Press. ELMONT PARK, N. Y., October 3—Pompoon, purchased for $2,000 as a yearling by Jerome H. Louchheim of Philadelphia, was widely acclaimed the 2-year-old ehamplon tonight after winning the rich Futurity in record time. ‘The son of Pompey, 1925 Futurity wvictor, covered the 615 furlongs of the ‘Widener chute four lengths ahead of ‘Warren Wright's Privileged, which saved the place from C. V. Whitney's Flying Cross by a neck. Pompoon, closing with a rush after Jockey Harry Richards had - worked him out of a pack of 17 juveniles, won $56.790 to bring his season’s earnings to $78,420. It was his sixth victory in seven starts. In his other race he ran second to No Sir, not entered in the Puturity. The Jockey Club gold cup went to Mrs. John D. Hertz's Count Arthur, which easily defeated Memory Book, | Giant Killer and Jean Bart over a 2-mile course. Joseph E. Widener's Bushranger, even money favorite, took the thirty- gixth running of the Grand National Steeplechase Handicap, third feature on the closing Belmont program. Pompoon Cracks Record. 'WENTY-FIVE thousand persons, crowding the picturesque Beimont grounds under a warm October sun, saw Pompoon run to victory in 1 minute 1625 seconds. one-fifth of a second under Balladier's record for the distance. Pompoon had the highest impost of 127 pounds, but his past perform- ances had made the Philadelphia broker’s colt the 8-5 choice for the race, for which horses are nominated | before they are foaled. ‘The start was delayed by Mrs. W. H. Furst's John P. War, which finally Wwas put on the outside. The Pompey colt was blocked early in the running, but Jockey Richards said afterward that as he worked Pompoon around five other horses to the outside, he knew he would win. Privileged, which won $9,000 as its share of the forty-seventh running of the world’s richest juvenile feature, had many backers at 8-1 because of his victory in the ‘Champagne Stakes here two weeks ago. Jockey Eddie Arcaro gave Privileged | 8 hard ride to overcome Interference, and the son of Sir Galahad, 3d, was closing gamely under 125 pounds, second highest weight. ‘Workman's Mount Third. SON'NY WORKMAN brought Flying Cross, & 15-1 shot, int6 third posi- | Chel tion after he had been outrun in the | first two furlongs. purse was "$5,400. Sir Damion, owned by Field, who won last year's futurity | with ‘Tintagel, was fourth, winning $1,000. Coupled with him was Char- ing Cross, who many believed would | run ahead of his stablemate, l'mt who smpped half way from home. . E: R Bradley's Billionaire and 3. E. Widener's Optic, which rated next to Pompoon in the betting, could not get clear and ran well back. Mrs. E. V. Mars’ Dodaway worked | up steadily on the inside. Dawn His share of the | Marshall | THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON Selections for fast track at Laurel tomorrow. FIRST RACE—HAPPY HAZEL, BLACK SOD, PHLOX. Odds-on favorite in her last at Lincoln Fields, HAPPY HAZEL re- ceived a poor ride and wound up third in back of Miss Chancery and Solar Maid. That was on September 15, and she immediately was shipped to Laurel after that, where she has been through a smart training grind. We believe she will come up for this test in her very best form. BLACK SOD showed a nifty performance in fin- ishing behind Light Chatter at Havre de Grace. PHLOX figures next best. SECOND RACE—THE BLACK- GUARD, SWIMALONG, BILLY BOB. ‘THE BLACKGUARD, a lad that finished second twice recently at Belmont Park against good leppers, gets the call in this hazardous steeplechase. SWIMALONG is in good hands and has schooled well over the Laurel barriers, BILLY BOB figures third best. THIRD RACE—SEAGULL, RID- ING HIGH, SMALL CHANGE. ‘There is no apparent reason why SEAGULL, a daughter of Rock Man, shouldnt duplicate her last . winning performance at Havre de Grace against the Maryland breds in the third. She whipped prac- tically the same class of horses and is forced to pick up only 2 pounds, although she won that race by four lengths. RIDING HIGH has worked well enough to get the edge over SMALL CHANGE. FOURTH RACE—ORIENTALIST, REX FLAG, LIVE GRANITE. War Admiral was entirely too good for Mrs, E. Denemark’s ORIENTALIST in the Eastern Shore Handicap at Havre de Grace, but the son of Wise Counsellor showed a brilliant performance to finish second. Meets a compara- tively cheap band of youngscers in the fourth and it shouldn’t be close. REX FLAG may hold LIVE GRANITE safe. (BEST BET—FLAG OF WAR, SEVENTH RACE.) FIFTH RACE — MUST BE, CHATMOSS, BROWN FEATHERS. MUST BE, a gelded son of Mis- step, didn't get into action this year until August and he has shown such marked improvement since then that we are going to give him the preference in the fifth. Jaber, Herondas and Skipton beat him in his last trip at Nar- ragansétt by a short margin. He set « terrific early pace in that race and didn't chuck it until he was well in the home lane. Drops 19 pounds from that effort and, although he steps up many noiches, that is a lot of difference in weight. CHATMOSS figures to - deieat BROWN FEATHERS. SIXTH RACE—SOBRIETY, COUNT, KIEVAN, Twice a winner in sprint races at Havre de Grace over good steeds, SOBRIETY, from the Van- derbilt barn, is moved up in & mile- and-70-yards test against good horses, but in his present form we can't overlook him. Although he has shown some fine sprint efforts, his breeding (he is a son of Dis- play) indicates he would be better suited over a distance. MY COUNT may head KIEVAN MY SEVENTH RACE—I-L\G OF WAR, MR. BUN, WESTON. If sent right back Monday, FLAG OF WAR appears to be the best bet on the card. He has several brilliant New England races to his credit that, if repeated, would win this easily. MR. BUN may do better at Laurel than he did at Havre de Grace. WESTON is drop- ping far down in class, EIGHTH RACE—HELEN BAB, INFILEE, JAMUL. HELEN BAB, winner of a smart race at Havre de Grace several days ago, drops back amoug the same kind in the eighth at Laurel Monday and may make jt two straight. When in form she is usually a consistent mare. IN- FILEE is well suited and may trim JAMUL. Epsom Downs ‘ Results | By the Associated Press. FIRST RACE—Purse. £300: elaimins: 3- np: 513 furlonks. By the Associajed Press. HICAGO, October 3.—Merina, Mrs. Willle Crump's 2-year- old filly, attracted very little attention for the $2,500 added Joliet Handicap at Lincoln Fields to- day, but they paid off on Merina after the race was run. The Kentucky filly scored by one length over the ex- treme outsider, Calculator, with the odds-on favorite, Challite, & very tired third. Merina paid $27.40 to win, $14.40 to place and $6.20 to show. The crowd of nearly 12,000 backed Challite to 4-to-5 favoritism, and it made Proph a hot second choice. It overlooked the five other starters. The Jay Jay, ridden b, 1936—PART ONE. start came and Jockey Basil James rushed Challite away with her cus- tomary burst of speed. Her rivals could not go with her, and she was five lengths in front as they swept into the turn. Calculator was second, Me- rina third and Proph next in line. Comes “I!h a Rush, FROH then on she began to fade. She still had & lengthy lead at the head of the stretch, but by this time Calculator was making up ground in the middle of the track, d the veteran Jimmy McCoy had taken Merina over to the rail and was coming with & rush. The tired filly faltered so badly a few yards from the finish line that Merina swept by on the inside to score her upset victory, and Calculator, too, had little trouble catching the favorite. Challite still was four lengths ahead | of Exclaim, which landed fourth, with Proph, Legenda and Lake View trail- ing in that order. Merina, a daughter of St. Henry- Ocirena, raced the 6 furlongs in |V 1:1215, while scoring her third vic- tory in a dozen starts. Her win was ! worth $2,150 to her owner.
