Bible Is “Best Seller” - 400th Anniversary of Translation to Bé Marked This Week. BY GEORGE PORTER. HE “best seller” in the English language has been on the market 400 years today. It was on October 4, 1535, that the first complete English trans- lation of the Bible was printed, and since that date it has retained undis- puted first rank among the books read by the English-speaking people of the They will unite in anniversary cele- brations of various sorts beginning to- | morrow and culminating in universal Bible Sunday, December 8. It was left for posterity to properly appraise his labors. Epitomizing the debt which Christendom feels toward Coverdale today, Right Rev. James E. Coverdale was known as one of the foremost orators of his day and his translation of the Bible is rated high from a literary standpoint, many of his musical phrases being retained in the autharized version. The translator was born in York- shire about 1488 and died in 1569. He was educated at Cambridge. Sub- sequent to the publication of his first complete English Bible he worked alone, and in co-operation with others in the compilation of several editions, including the popular Great Bible.
