The Library of Congress, beginning tomorrow and comtinuing for an in- | definite period, will have a special| exhibition of books and manuscripts | in honor of the memory of “the great- est Hebrew teacher of the Middle | Ages”—Moses ben Maimon, called | Maimonides, born at Cordova, Spain, | 800 vears ago March 30. | Announced by Dr. Herbert Putnam, | fibrarian, and prepared under the| supervision of Dr. Israel Schapiro, chief of the Semitic division, the ex- | hibit will occupy the north gallery of | the second floor of the Library build- | ing and will represent the American | 2spect of an international biblio- | graphic commemoration of Maimo- nides’ life and work. Explaining the significance of the display. Dr. Schapiro said vesterday: “Our purpose is to honor the name of a philosopher who also was an eminent jurist, physician and astron- omer, and who for more than seven centuries has weilded an_incalculable influence on Mohammedans, Chris- tians and Jews. We wish to do our| part in the octocentennial ce]ebra-[ tion being observed throughout the | world. especially in his native Spain, | and in Egypt, where he labored and | attained undying fame. “Maimonides has been described as “the leading rabbi and the greatest | Jew of his time’ but he was a man of such transcendent genius and pow- er that he really belongs to all times | and to all races. He was one of the noblest thinkers in universal history. and his teachings still contribute to human progress.” The Library will exhibit copies of | the three monumental works for which Maimonides is particularly re- membered—"“The Guide for the Per-| plexed,” the most important Jewish contribution to medieval philosophy, sttempting to harmonize biblical and Rabbinic teachings with Aristotleian concepts; “The Mishnah Torah,” the | only complete code of biblical and ‘Talmudic law, and “The Commentary | to the Mishnah,” written as a prac- tical guide for laymen in religious | and ethical matters and still consid- ered by the Jews the most original interpretation. Adams, 230 Spruce | avenue, Takoma Park, Md., was announced last night as| winner of the $50 Shrine slogan con- | test, and will be used for the imperial conclave of the order here June 9 to 15. At the same time plans were an- | nounced for transforming historic Pennsylvania avenue into a “Golden | Lane to Mecca” for the occasion. The | Avenue is to be decorated with spe- cial arches, carrying streamers and banners: light posts wrapped in cocoa fire, with palm leaf decorations, to give the effect of palm trees, and golden cylinders on all the Avenue lights. These ornaments are to make the famous old parade ground, over which the colorful pageants of the | Shrine will move in several parades, a “golden lane” with Oriental at- mosphere. Special Shrine emblems will be used and light posts also will carry groups of flags. Howard P. Foley, chalrman of the Committee on Decorations, is asking bids for the decorations along the Avenue. Plans also are under way for the Spring parade, a colorful water pageant to be staged on the opening day, Sunday, June 9. under direction of the Water Sports Com- mittee, of which E. C. Baltz, noted amateur yachtsman, is chairman. It is also planned to have a night parade of illuminated boats. The prize-winning slogan was sub- mitted by Mr. Adams after his 11- year-old daughter, Marjorie Lee, in- shown in the center. —sStar Staff Photo. sisted he enter the contest. He wrote several slogans, among which was the winner. Shrine leaders feel this year's “Make Your Salaam to Uncle Sam” is an equal to the famous “Park Your Camel with Uncle Sam’l,” of the former Shrine convention of 1923. They say it has the mystic Oriental flair associated with the Shrine, while | the “Uncle Sam” identifies it with the Nation’s Capital Prize-winner Adams works in the Plant Inspection Department of the Department of Agriculture, and said yesterday he never entered a contest | before. Among other slogans considered favorably by the judges, Robert P. Smith, potentate of Almas Temple and director general of the Convention Committee; James C. Hoyle, execu- tive secretary, and Curtis Hodges, chairman of the Publicity Committee, were the following: “Elephant and Donkey Boast, 'Cause They Are the Camel’s Host,” by Miss Frances Maurine Irwin of Chevy Chase, Md., who ornamented the slogan with figures of the ele- phant, camel and donkey. “Hey, Shriners, Here's the Key, Wel- come to Washington, D. C.,” by Mrs. James L. O'Connell. “Noble, the Key. to Your D. C.” from Miss Allene Herring. “Pilch Your Tent With the Gove ernment,” by Mrs. Roy M. Watson. “Rain or Shine, June's the Time,” by Miss Clare G. McCloskey “The Nation’s Toast From Coast to Coast.” James E. Kirwin. “Let Your Caravan Roam Toward the Capitol's Dome.” Wallace B.
