Bureau of Standards Finds 3 New ‘Radio Roof’ 450 Miles Up The newest layer, the outermost | of these so far known, has been ten- | tatively named the “G” layer. It is these layers of ionized air that make long-distance radio transmission possible between widely separated points on earth. If the layers were not there the signals would shoot off into space. Instead they are re- flected back to earth as from a mir- ror, then “bounce” back toward the sky again, and so travel to their ob- jective by a series of such “bounces” the main cause of these layers strip- | ping off electrons from the air atoms and thus rendering them electrically- | conducting. The layers vary in height | between day and night. By the Associated Press ] The Bureau of Standards disclosed _vnstcrday it had discovered a new high “radio roof” to the world—450 miles up—from which high frequency signals come bouncing back to earth. An 18-month study of the various layers of ilonized air at different heights brought the discovery. Tonized air is air which has been rendered electrically-conducting be- cause some of the electrons have been stripped away from its atoms. There are several layers of this ionized air <un'oundmg the earth, much like With a hearty laugh and a wave of his hand, Ivan Poderjay, former Yugoslavian Army officer, bids good-by to freedom at the gates of Sing Sing Prison.
