SPORTS. Joe Freschi Streaks MARKS UP THREE 400 SETS IN ROW Figures to Become First High Ranker Not Listed in | District League. ' BY ROD THOMAS. EAR after year the same names, for the most part, grace the Big Ten of the Washington City Duckpin Association, but at least one new one {5 guaranteed for the ranking list this season. Without further ado, the Ranking Committee can chalk off one of the places for Joe Freschi. [ For many seasons Freschi has been a better-than-average bowler, in sev- eral campaigns falling just short of official recognition. In the :ast week he rolled three sets. each in a different league. and his scores were 401 in the Federal, 400 in the Rosslyn Independent and 403 in the National Capital Three consecu- | tive 400s is quite a feat in itself, but couple this with the fact that in each | performance Preschi improved an average of better than 120, and you have a -ure-fire article for the Big Ten. Would Be a Precedent. ~OR the first time since the rank- ings were instituted, if you count Freschi “home,” the list will in- clude a bowler who didn’t compete in the District League. He is one of the first raters ever overlooked by that all-star organization, but several of its teams likely will be bidding for him next season. There isn't enough genu- | ine talent to fill the demand of busi- ness conzerns that sponsor crack teams. | Freschi, incidentally. is a member of the King Pin team which is making & strong bid for the National Capital | League 1 nt, being in third piace, but only iwo zames behind the lead- ing Heuric If the King Pins win the pennant theirs will have been just a victory. | for the team which has led the race & large part of the season, Sholl's Cafe, has been beaten, 2 to 1, four times by the King Pins Sholl's was knocked from the top perch by the Kine Pins two nights ago, the Heurichs assuming the lead by winning all games of a gouble- header.
