A-10 BARBARA HUTTON LEAVES FORU.3. Remarriage Prospects Are Topic of Discussion in London. By the Associated Press. LONDON, March 23 —Barbara Hut- ton, America’s poor little rich girl, left gossips of London talking today about her prospects for another mar- riage when she sailed from South- ampton for the United States and Reno. And police wondered why she re- mained a virtual prisoner in her hotel room, then sought assistance from Southampton police to escort her the few yards from her automo- | bile to the gangway of the Bremen. | Scotland Yard tonight was unable to shed light on it. Love Story Related. Soon after the princess made her getaway with police assistance, the London Sunda) Dispatch printed an | account of “five young people in a | love story,” with the princess as one | of them. | The Dispatch, about the love affairs of the Wool- worth helress, named two “admirers.” One was Count Haugwitz of Denmlrk. and the other Count Szaparty, & member of a noted Austrian family. Recounting her married life with Prince Alexis Mdivani, the news- paper said: “There were p.r'.l.nu reconciliations and more partings.” During one of these Barbara met Count Szaparty, the newspaper con- tinued, and Barbara’s father, who was with her, took an immediate liking to him. Later, the Dispatch said, when Barbara was making a whirlwind world tour she met Count Haugwitz at Karlsbad. The Dispatch said both counts have been in London for the past week and Barbara saw both sev- eral times. Marriage Problem Unsolved. The Dispatch says Barbara slipped out of London today with the problem of marrigge unsolved and “which of the counts will she marry?” People who know her say she pre- fers Haugwitz, but that her father would like her to marry Szaparty.” Presumably the fifth member of the group, including the heiress, the musical comedy star and two counts is Prince Mdivani. . = Snakes in Cash Drawer. THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, BASIC ALLOWANCE SCALE RESTORED McCarl Decision Affects Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard Officers. Commissioned officers will have their allowances for quarters and subsistence restored to basic scales on April 1 when the pay cut is lifted, Controller General McCarl held in an opinion to Secretary of the Navy Swanson made public yesterday. While the decision covers only Navy officers, the principle will be ap- plicable also to officers of the Army, Marine Corps, Public Health Service, Coast Guard and the Coast and Geo- detic Survey. The quarters’ allowance as fixed by presidential order is $20 per month per room and the subsistence allow- ance, 60 cents per allowance per day. Present rates are $19 and 57 cents. The McCarl decision also clears up a | seeming ambiguity that arose through | phrasing of the economy act which \provmed that there should be no re- duction when that act was no longer effective. Swanson asked if this should be considered permanent legislation or whether the act of 1922 giving Presi- dents the right to fix rtes for quar- | ters and subsistence would be effective, weaving a story | in the hope of finding a practical | and McCarl held that this earlier act still applies.
