NEW CHEVY CHASE BUS LINE URGED Citizens’ Group Declares | Present Transportation Facilities Inadequate. Declaring that the present bus and street car service does not fulfill the | needs of their section, the chevy, Chase Citizens' Association passed a | resolution last night petitioning the Public Utilities Commission for an express bus line between Chevy Chase | and downtown Wasninguon. ‘The resolution asked that the pro- posed line make frequent stops from | Chevy Chase Circle to Van Ness street, but that no stops be made be- | tween there and downtown. If the express line is put in operation, the association would be willing to have the present de luxe line discontinued. The resolution also asked that .the fare on the new line be set at 10 cents cash or a weekly pass for $1.25. Many Complaints Received. In introducing the resolution, J. R. Manning, chairman of the Public Utilittes Committee, stated that he had received over 100 complaints from members of the association protest- ing against the time required to reach the city and the lack of seats on the de luxe busses. Another resolution asking for several changes in the route of the Chevy Chase Loop bus was tabled until the next meeting. In response to a letter from the | American Federation of Churches, the | association passed a resolution asking | Congress to appropriate funds to con- | tinue character education in District | schools. Legalized Gambling Opposed. ‘The association also went on record as opposing any attempt to legalize gambling in Washington. A short talk on traffic conditions and problems was given by Burton W. Marsh, past traffic expert of Pitts- | burgh and Philadelphia. His talk was | illustrated with lantern slides. | BUS ORDER SCORED ON FOUR FEATURES Roberts Says Rush-Hour Express From Takoma Wouldn't Con- nect With 14th Street Direct. Complaint against four features of | the order of the Public Utilities Com- | mission for establishment of a rush- hour express bus service between Ta- koma and downtown Washington was voiced yesterday by People's Counsel William A. Roberts The commission yesterday rejected Roberts’ petition for a reconsidera- tion of the matter. Roberts had | claimed the 10-cent cash fare fixed for | the line was not justified. The people’s counsel insisted today there would be no direct connection between Takoma and Fourteenth street during rush hours, that the express bus patrons would have to walk a block to transfer to street cars on Fourteenth street. The feeder bus connection to Four- teenth street, operating in non-rush hours will provide slower service than the present street cars, he argued. ‘The express bus service will give per- sons travfiing to Fourteenth street poorer service, he added, and trans- fers will be required for persons travel- ing to points south of Pennsylvania avenue, CAROLINE 0’'DAY GREETS NEW HOUSE MEMBERS Woman Representative Assists ‘ Get-Acquainted Plans With Name Badges. About 100 new House members got acquainted last night as guests of the only woman among them, Represen- tative Caroline O'Day of New York.
