o v : o ; WASHINGTO Weekly Used PRIEST T0 RETURN [0 CHACD HORRORS Bolivian Chaplain Tells of Soldiers Going Insane - From Thirst. By the Assoclated Press. SANTIAGO, Chile, Pebruary 21.— After 22 months as a Bodvian Army chaplain in “green hell,” Rev. Father Luis Alberto Tapia is preparing to go back into the thick of it again. “When I first went.to the front" | said the slim little priest today, “there | were just three of us to minister to the whole Bolivian Army in the Chaco. It was a tremendous re- sponsibility. Our task was really threefold—we had to be nurses, preachers, and confessors to soldiers scattered over many kilometers of fighting front. “Always they called us when there was to be a big battle. Before the THE EVENING men went into the front lines I al- ways gave them a brief sermon. Captured With Bolivians. “Pirst I encouraged them to be men and to die bravely in their country’s cause. At the close, I gave them a bit of moral counsel, not much, but something to the point. Finally, I made them kneel and pray. Then I gave them absolution from their sins. They fought better after that.” Father Tapia was jerked bodily out of the front lines when, with 6,500 Bolivian soldiers, he was captyred by the Paraguayans at Camp Villa at the battle of Alihuata. That Para- guyan victory, as he described it, “managed to cut off the road to our water. Water is the war. You can put the strongest athlete beside a | machine gun with plenty of ammu- nition and food, but deny him water and see what happens. Saw Men Go Insane, “The first day he fights desperately. The second day the same. The third day he is not so good. The fourth day his strength fails him. By the fifth day, he is through; his body will not obey his will, We were captured on the fifth day. “I believe half of our men died of thirst or went insane. I used to see soldiers jump up suddenly and start dencing. We tried to pull them STAR, WASHINGTON, down into trenches and safety. They only laughed. They were crazy.” Father Tapla was taken to and placed in a monastery. Then he was conducted to a raflroad station and sent by special pass to Buenos Aires. Now he intends to go back to his soldiers. ANTEATER ESCAPES IN GOTHAM TERMINAL “Schnozzle” Causes ‘Furor in Grand Central Station, but Is Recaptured. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 21.—All was consternation in the Grand Central terminal yesterday—an anteater, with the usual long snout and shagey. gray-brown coat—escaped from its traveling case. Todney Molloy, who captured the animal in a South American jungle, and his wife and two policemen final- ly caught the anteater, which had skidded persistently on the slippery concrete flooring. “Now be a good boy, Schnozzle,” sald Mrs. Molloy as the group closed in on the animal.
