THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, AN INSTITUTION Swiftly Flowing Currents of Time Have Brought WASHINGTON'S INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS HOTEL To An Epochal Milestone 4 I Ten years? Yes, that's right. Though it may be difficult for some to realize what the National Capital was really like before The Mayflower raised its proud flags of welcome to the world. Ten glorious years they have been of service, and day-by-day reflection of the cosmopolitan, pulsating life that is Washington. 1 Abraham Lincoln never stopped at The Mayflower. Only the Presidents within our time have made use of the unexcelled facilities conceived for a discriminating clientele. Our guests naturally expect luxuries and comforts never dreanied of in Lincoln’s time. Here is a hotel that is the essence and tempo of Today. .fi.Ten Years Young! That is the meaning of our birthday. Replacements and reno- vations have kept in step during the triumphal march ahead. In 1934 alone, more than $85,000 was expended on improvements. Tidal waves from the troubled economic seas have never been able to slightly jar the quality rigging of the Good Ship. ) 1l Practically the entire crew—750 strong—serves a modern ‘public today as was present on February 18, 1925. Many of the staff members have spent a lifetime in perfection of their chosen fields of specialized service. 1 Advancements of science and industry have been quickly adopted in this progressive institution. The spirit of the organization reaches out constantly for new methods, new ideas. It is not thwarted by the accumulations of precedent nor halted by the weakness of senility. When tele- vision becomes a serviceable reality, we will have it. .fi. Leaders of industry, finance, diplomacy, govern- ment and the social world arrive every day. They suggest the assembly of a “Who's Who" of the universe. Within our brief but momentous span, there has been a total of 612,394 registrations at the front desk. fi In the realm of expert culinary art, The Mayflower's reputation is impregnable. It has been our privilege during the past ten years to serve 5,006,112 individual meals. Individual, because the same high standards of food preparation and manner of service prevail whether the order is for two or two thousand. [ 1 That masterful blending of the nobler concepts of the "mine host” era of hotel operation with modern merchandising methods has helped in the blazoning of our neveruncertain course to the summit. This and a staff that is happiest when being called upon to perform seemingly impossible tasks. From our watch-tower of Retrospect, we have seen this museum of the artistic as well as the utilitarian become the favored meeting place for Washing- tonians. Local organizations plan their luncheons, dinners, receptions and other functions here with a feeling of partnership in our own high resolves. The First Ten Years would not have been so golden nor the future so roseate except for their demonstra- tion of confidence. : 1 To have lived these ten years is much. To have grown the full ten years is more. For the true test of leadership is more than mere age. We wish to acknowledge with pride and gratitude those birthday greetings from generous friends. May we, in turn, wish you many “happy returns” to your hotel. D. C., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1935.
