By the Associated Press. AUBURN, Me., December 19.—With his sweetheart dead in his car, Willie Bouthilette, 25, drove to police head~ quarters yesterday and calmly an- nounced, “I might as well tell you, I just shot my girl friend.” Bouthilette, a crippled unemployed taxicab driver, was lodged in jail on a murder charge while authorities sought to draw from him the full story of the shooting of the girl, Joan Asselin, 17, Girl Found in Car. Startled by Bouthilette’s announce- ment as he walked into the station, Desk Officer Timothy Walsh rushed outside and found the girl dead in the car, shot in the breast. Under subsequent questioning and in a statement made to a police clerk, Bouthilette was quoted as saying he drove with the girl to a lonely Sabattus road six miles from Lewiston and there fired the shot. Sheriff David Walton and deputies questioned Bouthilette at length with- out obtaining a motive for the slaying. Bouthilette denied he and the girl had argued and described her as “the best friend I ever had.” For the benefit of Walton and others, Bouthilette demonstrated how he fired the bullet, the sheriff said. He put a chamois skin over the pistol and fired through it, Walton said, eliminating the possibility of powder stains. Police Skeptical of Story. Bouthilett'’s statement to Lewiston police indicated he would claim he and the girl had entered into a suicide pact, that he had supplied the pistol and she the cartridge, but police were hesitant about accepting it. Bouthilette and the girl, & shoe worker, had been friends for four years. He told police that her family ob- jected to their marriage. Until four months ago, Bouthilette, who can walk only by grasping his ankles with his hands, roomed at the home of the dead girl's sister, Mrs. Rose Lizotte. THE EVENING “STAR, "WASHINGTON, D. The ‘Washington Home for Incur- ables has been administered in such a way as to constitute “a proud rec- ord for an institution run entirely by women in such a fearful year as 1934 has been,” Mrs. Archibald Hop- kins, the president, said in her an- nual report made public today. Mrs. Hopkins pointed out that $117,974.11 had been expended for s new addition opened in January, and repairs to the old building, at Wis- consin avenue and Upton street, and that there now remains an endow- ment of $546,423.20, with only a small debt for the addition and some- what of a deficit in the maintenance account. Chronological Progress Told. Her report was a chronological ac- count of events at the home in.the past year, recounting in this con- nection a trip of inspection by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt. She also paid tribute to the work of those associated with her in this enterprise. In a supplementary report Mrs. Hugh C. Wallace, first vice. president, showed 58 general patients and 21 cancer patients admitted to the home in the year ending November 1. The g:pumion there now is 164, of whom are indigent, The actual expense of caring for a patient, due to mount- ing costs, is $54.12 monthly, Mrs, Wal- lace said. Congress gave $10,008.58 towards operation of the home, Outsider Influx Shown. The problem has been complicated by the influx of outsiders, the report explained, sdding: “We had hoped that Congress would increase our ap- propriation since we had assumed a heavier burden in caring for many more of the indigent now in the Dis- trict who come from all the States of the Union.” ‘The report carries a foreword that donations of money, food and old linen for the cancer ward always are gratefully received.
