CURB IS STEADIER IN LATE TRADING Tone Improves After Drop of Fractions to More Than Point at Start. BY G. H. PHILLIPS, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, December 19.—The Ourb market steadied slightly in late trading today after dipping fractions to a point or more in forenoon deal- 5. m"rhere was a better demand for some of the metals, ofls and specialties, which halted the general downward trend, but utilities continued reac- tionary. Trading was slow. American Gas was 7% of a point lower, Cities Service, Electric Bond & Share and Niagara Hudson lost minor fractions and declines up to a point occurred in Aluminum Co., Pan-Ameri- can Ajrways, Sherwin Williams, Swift & Co., Hiram Walker and Pittsburgh Plate Glass. EXPANSION BROADENS ON HARDWARE MARKET Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 19.—A mar- ket signalized by steadying prices has had an evident effect upon trade morale in the hardware field during recent weeks. Buying is becoming more confident, more general, and with a little more reach into the future, Hardware Age will say tomorrow in its market summary. ‘The well-maintained pace of retail trade, with gains over last year's fig- ures practically unbroken, has forced buying in nearly all lines and depart- ments. Conservatism is still the key- note, and even where price moves promise some speculative gain, the average purchase is moderate. DOMESTIC BONDS. High. Low. Noon. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, December 19.—With mill schedules being pushed in prepa- ration for a three-day Christmas shut- down, steel production and scrap prices have moved upward for the ninth consecutive week, the Iron Age re- ported today. It estimated the cur- rent operating rate at 35% per cent of capacity, a gain of 2!, points over a week ago and the highest rate since the end of June. A further rise in scrap made the Iron Age index for old metal $11.58 a ton, the highest since the middle of May. Mills plan to resume operations after Christmas and some will run through the New Year perlod. according to the review. “Although part of the current ex- pansion in output is attributable to i replenishment of raw steel stocks,” it added, “this is not the case in all pro- ducing districts. In one important center mills have been forced to run on cold steel to meet the urgent needs of the automobile trade. “The long-delayed new model pro- gram of the motor car makers has now gotten under way in earnest.
