Christ Child Society w Gains Impetus for Christmas. A pioneer in the field of distribut- ing Christmas toys to underprivileged children the Christ Child Society has established headquarters this year at 1640 Connecticut avenue. Miss Katherine Tumulty, daughter of Joseph P. Tumulty, secretary to the President in the Wilson admin- istration, is chairman of the society’s Christmas Committee. In the group helping her to care for the toys, which are pouring in at headquarters and will be distributed to hundreds of | youngsters, are her sisters, the Misses Tumuilty; Mrs. Gwinn Gardiner, Miss Eleanor O'Donahue and Mrs. Lewis | Hays Watkins. Mrs, Martin Ramsay is in charge at headquarters. The president of the Christ Child Society is Miss Mary V. Merrick, who founded the organization over 40 years ago and has directed its ever-growing activities since then—in spite of the fact that she is an invalid who has not moved from her chair in half a century. It is a requisite for member- ship that each members of the so- ciety answer one child’s letter to the Christ Child with the gift for which he or she asks. They are delivered to the headquarters, sorted out and dis- tributed. Moreover, for the last 10 years, the organization has given a Christmas pageant each season, the admission price being a toy. Many school chil- dren were guests at the pageant this year, held at the Wardman Park ‘Theater, and hundreds more gifts were collected for children who might have | been passed by. The Christ Child Society’s Christ- mas gift distribution is but one of many activities. It provides layettes for new babies, maintains a country home for convalescent children and carries on philanthropic work on many lines. Lieut. Comdr. Alexander Macomb, U. S.
