Y., December 18.— Believed to be the first community in the country to co-operate with Federal authorities in their plan to finger- print as many citizens as possible to assist in identification and protection, Rochester police have annonuced that the services of the Bureau of Identifi- cation are open to any Rochesterian over 7 years of age. ‘The announcement was made by Chief of Police Henry T. Copenhagen on his return from Attorney General Homer §. Cummings’ crime conference in Washington. The service will be free and the prints will not be placed in criminel files, Chief Copenhagen announced. Cards with the prints will be returned to the citizen if desired or forwarded to the non-criminal branch of the Federal Identification Bureau. Chief Copenhagen, in praising the aim of the plan to fingerprint all citizens possible, cited the recent ‘babes in the woods” case in Pennsyl- vania. The three children found dead In the woods could have been identified with a minimum of trouble had their prints been recorded, he said. By the Associated Press. LANSING, Mich., December 18.— The number of definitely recorded dead in the Hotel Kerns fire tragedy was increased to 32 today with the death of Dr. Frederick C. Thiede, 46- year-old Grand Rapids physician, in a hospital. He was the fourteenth person to die of injuries suffered in attempting to escape the flames that swept the hotel a week ago today. Eighteen bodies have been taken from the ruins or from the Grand River into which some of the victims jumped. Police said unaccounted for persons believed to have been guests in the hotel might swell the list of dead to 34, but the search for bodies has been abandoned. An inquest which already has de- veloped testimony said by officials to indicate there was delay in sounding the alarm after the fire was discovered, resumed today. — Canadians Like Eggs. ‘When England recently boasted that its people ate an average of 152 eggs a year it was brought out that Cana- dians consumed just twice as many. Y., December 18.—The little red -céttage on the Christmas seal has a nostalgic appeal for Mrs. Carolyn P. Lindsay of Albany, the first tuberculosis patient to emerge from that Saranac Lake retreat cured of the malady. Mrs. Lindsay, a well-known temper-" ance advocate, said today that she and her sister were the first patients quar- tered by Dr. Edward Livingston Tru- deau in the red cottage. Aimee was the eldest of the Pent- land sisters of Philadelphia. Carolyn was about two years yourger. They were in their 'teens when they went by bus from Loon Lake to Saranac. A blizzard raged in the Adirondacks a' the girls made the last lap to Tru- daeu’s cottage. Only a short time before the physician had conquered tuberculosis. Trudeau’s outdoor treatments in the rigorous climate of the New York mountains were revolutionary and Mrs. Lindsay recalled that friends of her family did not expect to see the girls again. Aimee’s life was prolonged 10 years. Mrs. Lindsay is more than 60.
