ADAMS TO TELL OF SUN RESEARCH Mount Wilson Observatory Di- rector Will Give Annual Arthur Lecture Tonight. Latest results of Mount Wilson Ob- servatory researches on the compo- sition of the sun through study of the behavior of its atoms will be de- scribed by Dr. Walter 8, Adams, di- rector of the observatory, in the fourth annual Arthur lecture of the Smithsonian Institution at the Na- tional Museum this evening. During the past year several new lines of investigation have been un- dertaken under Dr. Adams’ direction which promise to give a new insight on the composition of the “star” upon which the life of the earth depends. Among other things, the astronomers are trying to determine whether there is a cycle of ultraviolet light emission which corresponds to the eleventh-year sunspot cycle. If such a cycle can be shown to exist some obscure earthly phenomena might be cleared up. A new method of studying the spec- tra of the sun also has been devised by which it may be possible to get much better quantitative estimates of the proportions of the various ele- ments in its composition. Investigation of the sun, Dr. Adams says, resolves itself largely into a series of problems in atomic physics. S Deaths Reported. Rachael E. w-m ns :uu Cedar st.
