REND CAONS R ON DNDREE FEES Five Washington Suits Help . Make 1934 Third High Year on Filings. By 'the Assoclated Press. RENO, Nev.,, December 18.—The year 1934 has been another unusually profitable one for Reno's divorce at- torneys, Nearly 2,800 men and women from every State, the District of Columbia, Alask#, Hawail, Panama, the Philip- pines and 24 foreign countries have filed divorce suits during the year. Only 1931, with 4,745 suits filed, and 1932, with 3,162, shows a larger volume of business in the long his- tory of Reno's existence as the Na- tion’s leading divorce center. Of the 2,769 suits in 1934, more than half were filed by marital mal- contents who flocked to Reno from New York and California. Social Registers Contribute. The social registers of a dozen cities contributed 140 divorce seekers and Who's Who in America added 21. Eighty-six social registerites from New York City alone sought divorces. Nine came from Boston, seven from Phila- delphia, six from Buffalo, six from San Francisco, five from each of Bal- timore, Chicago and Washington, D. C.; four from Pittsburgh, three from Cincinnati and one from each of Dayton and St. Louis. New York, as usual, led all States with 856 divorce scekers. California was second with 602, New Jersey third with 158, and Nevada herself a good fourth with 141, Other States Contribute. From outside the United States proper, divorce seekers came in the following numbers: Canada, 47; England, 22; Philip. pines, 9; Hawaii, 7, France, 6; Ber- muda, China, Italy and Germany, 5 each; India and Nova Scotia, 4 each Russia, 3; Alaska, Honduras, Portugal, Venezuela and Yugoslavia, 2 each; Austria, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Hol- land, Lithuania, Mexico, Panama, Poland, Scotland and Switzerland, 1 each, Washoe County collected an esti- mated $75,000 in filing fees and court costs alone. With at least one of the principals in each case compelled to remain in Reno for six weeks and often longer, divorces brought hun- dreds of thousands of dollars to apart- ment houses, hotels, and business establishments during the year. DOMESTIC LIQUOR TAX MAY REMAIN SAME Congress May Force Down Prices Through Change in Re- ciprocal Treaties. By the Associated Press. A move was gaining strength on Capitol Hill today to let domestic taxes on liquor stay where they are and force prices down through the give-and-take treaties with foreign nations. Chatrman Hill, Democrat, of Wash- ington of the House Wi nd Means Subcommittee which is studying tax laws was one advocate of such a plan. Others feel as he does. He took the stand that, although liquor tax receipts had not been what was expected, retail prices had much to do with that. “The present import tax is $5 a gallon,” Hill said. “Under reciprocal treaties, the President can reduce that to $2.50. At the same time, domestic producers could make money and pay the present $2 domestic tax. They would still have $2.50 worth of pro- tection from foreign liquors. “Should the import tax be reduced, I believe the general retail price level would drop.” $100 Call Orders Clubs. Ordering of a set of flexible-shaft American golf clubs by trans-Pacific telephone was one of the first bits of business handled by the newly in- augurated service between the United States and Japan. A conversation between Yukichi Iwanaga, managing director of the Rengo News Agency of Japan, to Ambassador Saito here, costing about $100, brought the re- quest for the clubs. | TQOYS; and Dads, visit your nearest :American Flyer dealer and see the new steam type locomotives, with the latest advanced 'features and the new' !. By the Assoclated Press. SAN FRANCISCO, December 18— Because of the death of Evelyn, an octopus, the task of “mothering” 200 of her eggs has fallen to attendants at the Steinhart Aquarjum here. Evelyn died after a three-weeks’ “hunger strike” that began when she first started to hover over a cluster of 200 eggs, turning them over every few minutes with her tentacles. “As soon as she died we rushed Os- car, her mate, to the eggs, but he wouldn't have anything to do with them,” Alvin Seale, superintendent of the aquarium, said. “Now we have turned a streflm of sea water on them, constantly re- volving ‘them as the mother octopus did, and hoping that they will hatch 'Vassarette' for young Washingtonians $5.00 Made of Lastex two-way stretch with the “invisa grip” gar- ters that don’t show under the tightest dress.
