EW YORK, May 5—Gene Tunney was playing squash rackets at the Park Avenue Club. To see the retired heavyweight champion perform, no average spectator would be- lieve he has been playing the game only a short time. His co- ordination of hand and eye is remarkable, and he is fast on his feet. Tunney was asked about vari- ous newspaper articles, in which he was made to pick Sharkey over Schmeling. | “How could I pick Sharkey?” he said. “He is too uncertain. From a | betting standpoint he would be a poor | risk. Sharkey is a better boxer than Schmeling, he knows more and he can | hit a little harder. In the first three | rounds of their former fight he out- | classed Schmeling so badly that I be- | gan to feel sorry for the German. But | ne Shlrkevs disposition is against him You don't know what he will do.” OW lbnut Srhmellng"' ‘Schmeling is a fellow who can take a punch, and he is game all the way through. He may not be & man who can adapt himself to qulck changes of plan to suit varying onditions, but once he has adopted a plnn of battle, he will stick to it. He an aggressive, plodding fighter— c(end.(asl would be a better word. No matter how things are going, he will ‘not become discouraged. He takes ad- vantage of his opportunities, but he does not make them—doesn't feint an opponent into an opening. “But he is an intelligent fellow and showed tremendous jmprovemen® against Stribling. His courage, his de- termination and his stamina are going to make him a very tough opponent for Sharkey Did you ever change your plan of battle while actually fighting? “Certainly I remember one bout where I had made up my mind that the way to beat a certain opponent was to step outside of his left hook. I started stepping back and he started popping me on the chin. I had to change my plans or get knocked out.” HAT makes you think that Schmeling is not a deadly hit- ter2” “If he were, he would have stopped Stribling long before he did. He doesn’t, for example, shoot a right to the jaw with all his weight behind it He gets in close and drops his right on an opponent. It is almost a chop. He is a good hitter, but not a great hittes Tunney's idea of the Schmeling- Sharkey affair appears to be the same as that held by a number of others conversant with the boxing game. They feel that Sharkey has class, but that he |also has about the stability of quick- silver. What counts in the ring is not Iatent ability, but actual performance The one fact they have to go on is that | Western, East‘em Clash on May 17 HE Western-Eastern base ball game, listed as the opener in the high school champlonship se- ries, that was prevented by rain will be played on May 17, it was announced today The contest will have an impor- tant bearing on the title series as it is Western that is pressing Fast- ern for the honor: Schmeling will put up the very best battiefof which he is capable, and that he is a pretty capable young man with the heart of a lion and the persistence of a bulldog. ERSONALLY, we believe that Max Schmeling is not only an intelligent young man, but a much faster thinker than most of them give him credit for being. Steadfastness may be one of his greatest traits, but he uses his head in the ring for other purposes than to block punches. He has always adapted his style o that of the man he was fighting and has done it pretty effec- tively. As far as Sharkey Is concerned, we believe, with William Muldoon, that he has the natural attributes of a cham- plon, with the single exception of tem- perament. He can be a great fighter, when his disposition doesn't betray him. The hardest opponent for Sharkey to overcome is Sharkey. “What about these stories that you may return to the ring?” Tunney was asked “That's sheer nonsense,” he said; “the odds on that wager are $10.000 to & dime. I have never even given it & thought. You know that. Gene Tunney always will be inter- ested in boxing. but he has left pro- fessional fighting far back of him on the trail which leads to other things. YOUNG VAN,IN PRELIM IS FISTIC ATTRACTION Knockout Sensation Will Seek Seventh Straight in Bout With Burns Tuesday. ARREN VAN SCIVER, light- 5 heavy and Washington's best prospect in the prize ring will try for his seventh straight knockout victory next Tuesday night in a four-round preliminary of the Portner Arena card at Alexandria His opponent will be K. O. Burns of Baltimore, who last week, at Portner's, defeated Sammy Britt. Although Van Sciver—or Young Van. to use his ring name—is down for a preliminary, he will be possibly the. outstanding attraction of the show,® which will feature three eight-rounders Billy Landers will meet Benny Schwartz, Ken Overlin will face Joe Smaliwood and Billy Strickler will meet Billy Fiemster. In a four-round opener Marino Marini will oppose Donald First. Young Van's sensational siart as a ringman nas won the attention of so- | called big shots of the boxing world. Several New York managers recently | have made inquiries about the 19-° year-old Washington youth who has | won all of his bouts with quick knock- { outs, six in number. But not a little® | of Van's success is attributed to astute- | management by Walter Haight and in- | struction by Harry Kid Grove and the, youngster is more than satisfled to | string with them. | Haight steadfastly has refused to ad-" vance Van to semi-wind-up and main- | bout spots. 5 Reduced Prices Good From Time of Publica« tion 't 9:30p, 1Y 2st0 Refinish Yonr C-r ‘With | COL-O-TEC Oil Lacquer 196 219 238 131 106 137 | | Produces an excel- Jent Snrey.
